Cast Bullets at Extreme Benchrest

Good question Bwalton. We had to waite for the match to see how there were going to do it. We didn't shoot the match. We were in the peanut gallery.

The target was the SR-1 The national match target for 100 yards. The 6 5/16 inch bull appears about the same width as the front sight post on a M-16, but these targets were set at 200 yards. The 10 ring is about 3 1/4 inches. This target has been a standard since the 1960s when it replaced the old 5 point target.

There were four bulls posted and five shots were taken at each bull. Hits on the target outside the five ring counted as a 4.

Score was a point total for 20 record shots.

The wind kicked up and one shooter told me he was aiming off the paper in order to hit the bull.

We will see the scores tonight.

I participated in the 200 yrd big bore shoot this year at EBR and placed fifth overall. I was shooting the Bush Buck in .45 cal in a 450 gr cast bullet. The rifle is offered at the AOA store and Kip Perow is a bit of an expert with it. The shooters who placed in the first three places all used modified rifles shooting various caliber and then Kip and myself coming in 4th and 5th respectivley shooting the Bush Buck in .45 cal.
I really enjoyed the shoot and was impressed yet again how air rifles can push such a heavy round that far down range and still be accurate. I struggeled a bit during the shoot from a borrowed rifle ( mine had a problem last minute) that had a much smaller scope than my rifle so identifying ones hits was very difficult for adjustments.
If I had a vote, I would suggest the modified rifles be in a category unto themselves while the stock rifles compete on an even playing field. All-in-all if was a good time had by all and many spectators coming over to observe the match.
My prediction is that next year will be three times the number of participants and the shooting will get even better.
