Careful what u wish for(need to vent)

so.........

ever since i was a kid, i have always enjoyed outdoor activities that were “unpopular”.

growing up, and still Bowfishing is my passion. along with ice fishing and bowhunting for deer.

all three of these activities were not high on the popularity list. but every one of them have been flooded by newcomers and popularity in recent years. seems like i cannot have a spot to myself anymore. i blame the internet and social media.

why is it that some poeple have to brag about what they are doing? Ok, ok. bragging isnt terrible. but dont give away your spot in pictures or by flat out announcing it to the world! Your spot might be my spot! Thanks alot!

growing up, i would tell people i bowfish. 99% of them never heard of it or didnt know anyone who did it. now it is totally reversed.

ENOUGH SAID.

UNFORTUNATELY i see airgunning going down the same road. all the posts pushing guns and now FX hybrid pellets.

just sayin.... just remember this post years from now when u have a hard time getting a new permission because there are already some other airgunners that have the permission. IT WILL HAPPEN and u will be wishing you could go back to the old days.

not many people grow up easing into the sport and enjoying knowledge of the sport they love. now days a newcommer sees all the hype and top equipment and jumps right to the top. they are missing the point!

id like to know how many bowhunters that have taken up the sport in the last 15 years started with a recurve or longbow shooting with fingers. they dont know or appreciate how it feels to take an animal at close range( because shooting traditional gear you cant just pull of many shots over 30 yards).

could go on, but i think most see my point.

just needed to vent today.....

here were like 400 icefisherman showed up in a spot where ill bet 350 of them just got the word on the internet or social media instead of puting in their own time themselves.

thanks for listening.

I can see where it sucks to have your favorite fishing or hunting spots be over run by newcomers who heard about on the web. Don’t let it get you down. As for “permissions” it’s a safe bet that your not the only person the landowner has given permission to. Some landowners welcome all the help they can get. Even if someone buys all the shiny gear, they still need to put in the time if they’re serious, if not they soon fade away.

When I read this I had to look twice at who wrote it. Thought maybe I drank too much and wrote it without knowing I did. I started bowhunting in 1980. I have always had a good job and was only briefly married. This enabled me to come in on the ground floor of a ton of hobbies that got basically ruined by popularity. I was hunting giant bucks in multiple states on about any land I wanted while the current crop of vidiots on the outdoor channel were still in diapers or shooting spikes. What gives me comfort and you also is we were fortunate enough to see and enjoy the good old days. Remember that when a slug from an airgun comes flying through your house because some kid thinks that’s what he needs to shoot things out of trees at long distances.

I have never bow hunted, can't really shoot a bow very well, but when I was a teen, my father and I used to hunt up in northern Michigan where we lived. Well, long story short, but I'm in my 50's now and my dad has been gone for quite a while.

One night I was bored, so I started doing some checking to see if I could maybe get back up there for a hunt, more out of nostalgia than anything else...nope. All the older guys dad knew were all dead and gone, and their farms and woods had long been sold off to a bunch of clowns buying "over-sized" lots, just so they could have a little part of what they thought was "country" living. So lame.

The deer are gone from our old spots, there are housed scattered about all over the place, and no hunting is allowed due to over population of people...so goes the future. Meh, guess that's why I just target shoot anymore.

I went through the same thing with motorcycle stunt riding. I had spots that I rode for years without issue. I’d show up every night and wave to the employees as they left as I was clearing out the loose shopping carts. On the random occasion a police officer would come through it was a brief conversation, hand shake and a “be safe”.
Gained a little popularity and the new crowd made a scene, left trash, and confused a potentially dangerous activity with a daycare friendly environment and it all came to an end.

Hate to be a nazi about hobbies that I enjoy but it’s unfortunate when others don’t show the proper respect that is due.

I got your license plate number so I will figure out where you fish. Just kidding. Just pointing out that the internet addiction of showing off can cost us more than we think. Like all the poachers in the hunting forum until guys started calling them on it. It’s what tsmith was venting about. It’s not about being greedy, it’s about being smart.

I understand totally. Another activity/interest/hobby....what ever you want to call it, that I have been heavily involved in doing for 25 years or so fell victim to a TV show and then YouTube. I have been metal detecting for many years. There were so many "virgin" places that could be found if you did your homework and due diligence. It took time, research and being very respectful to property owners to gain access and permission to detect and dig. Well....after everybody and their brother decided they were metal detectorists and treasure hunters after watching a popular TV show and what became popular YouTube channels, it rather quickly became more difficult to gain access to a lot of properties. People that had not been taught properly or even taken the time to learn had left a bad taste with many property owners.......which made it more difficult for the rest of us who have been at this a long time. Sometimes it's best if the masses remain ignorant and uninterested in what ever it is that you love doing.

I think what the OP is trying to get across here is that some folks just can't do anything without posting it on social media. This includes offering information about anything. Years ago I had a trout stream I fished that wasn't actually stocked but got stocked by an adjoining stream. Went fishing one Sunday and caught 8 or 10 which I released. Next day at work this guy who was getting ready to retire asked me what I did over the weekend so I told him. He basically called me a liar as it was late summer and few people even fished then. I assured him and made the mistake of telling him where I was fishing. A close friend heard me and told me I made a big mistake because Bob uses a frying pan to land all fish and not a net. I made a big mistake and never repeated it. Bob fished that creek till he thought he had every last one. I have had a guy one time follow my drag marks into where I killed a buck right before dark. I knew this because the tip of the arrow and broadhead broke off so I stood it up against a tree near the gut pile. Next morning before daylight I went back to cover my drag marks as best as I could and retrieve the arrow piece and broadhead. It was gone! Next year opening morning I get to my stand an hour before daylight only to have this guy come in and ask me if he would be too close if he went up his tree stand. His stand was twenty feet away. What the OP said about bowhunting is SPOT ON. By the way I am one of the guys who started bowhunting in Pa.in the early 70's with a 40 lb. Howatt Diablo recurve. Even then 20 percent of the nations bowhunters were in Pa. Nowadays nearly half the deer in my management area are killed with arrows.

TSmith, I think you are far too worried about this for a guy from South Dakota. I grew up in Rapid City and last time I went back for a visit, it didn't look like things had built up that much. Most of us on the East coast only dream of having those open areas in the Badlands or the Black Hills with only a 10 minute drive.

Eddie E.

u are correct about the east coast.

i understand we are fortunate here in SD. BUT, i have grown up in the 70’s and 80’s. it is 100x worse now. there were not 1000 ice fishermen on one lake back then . i dont think that many people ice fished. bowhunting.... same. BOWFISHING, explained that in my first post.

just how is it that 100 trucks parked in one parking lot of a lake acess are from 4 different states? over half are not from SD. internet and social media.

someone mentioned i was greedy. HA! so now when i try to get permission to hunt private land and am turned down cuz some weekend warriors are paying to hunt it"............Who’s greedy? not the “raised with hunting in our blood “ guys.

i was a little hotter yesterday. but wouldnt have started this post if there was no issue.
