Can’t get good wood :( or can we? New gun, new wood:)

This is not a post about erectile dysfunction... I am an EdGun fan! I love the guns. It kills me to see folks showing off the grain patterns in their stocks. Granted...it does not make them shoot better, but just once I would love to get a great piece of wood on an EdGun. My R3M was so boring I painted it. I have been spending lots of time with the R5M Long and dangit does it shoot waaaaaay better than the stock looks. I have been refinishing today trying to get some grain to pop. No can do! This gun deserves better. Anybody know of a custom stock maker that can do it justice? Ed, I think there is possibly a market for “exhibition grade” stocks. Joe

I agree I was disappointed about the look of the walnut in my R3M it’s was OK I didn’t complain about it but if want something that looks outstanding keep your fingers crossed as I don’t know if there is such a thing.
i love the way the gun shoots and in this type of gun that’s more important.

Exhibition grade , bullpup, ugh ( ly ) but hey so are funny cars.

As long as you own one there are several people who would replicate your stock in nice black walnut or such.

beware. the gnarlier the wood grain, the weaker it is. a nice straight grain won't move nearly as much as a well figured wood. curly, wavy grain looks nice, but a single drop to the ground could be it's demise.

Have you considered having the stock dipped? There are some really beautiful choices out there.

What wood is it ? There are ways to accentuate grain and bring out the wood...

I stripped it and let it dry. I then gave it a 3 day oil finish from 300-1500 grit. It is smooth as glass and very clean looking. There is just not much figure in the grain of the wood. It is good looking, but shoots better than the stock looks IMO. I have figured some things out and this rifle is growing on me every day.

Yea, I wish more airgun manufactures would offer laminate stocks. Once I realize I going to keep a gun for good, I immediately want to switch out the stock for a colored laminate. I've had my Lelya 2.0 for onlt a month and it already needs one.

Maybe you could treat the wood with potassium permanganate or potassium dichromate to get more or better color. You can even use it on a cotton string to make stripes.

Lol, I still reckon Vulcans have the worst walnut possible. Mine is so bland it may as well be beige plastic.

That said, it doesn't bug me too much when it gets the odd whack in the field.

One day I'll man up and carve out a stock from some African Rosewood I've got. Its gorgeous and up there with the strongest stuff per unit weight there is. Really stable too. Made a recurve bow riser out of it a while back

Only issue is strong, hard wood makes for very difficult woodwork
