Can someone explain what the drilled hold above the regulator is for?

Ok I have a question. I put a regulator in my rifle...Works great. But on mine you take out the end rubber seal and keep the end cap loose by a couple thousands or so. Others drill a small hole that fits between the two seals on the regulator. What I can't figure out is this. So you pull the trigger which opens the valve the air flows out of the regulator and up the tube behind the pellet and the air pressure pushes the pellets out of the barrel. What does the hole or the loose cap do. Equalizes the pressure? If it makes a vacuum what difference would that make? Sorry for my asking.. I"m new at all this and just trying to learn as I go. Like my dad use to tell me ...If you never ask you will never learn... : )
Thanks again

Richard, no problem. I am relatively new to PCP guns myself, but found the Robert Lane videos on regulators very helpful. There are quite a few of them. They also helped me determine a problem with fitting a regulator into my JKHAN Noblesse rifle. It kept leaking slowly after fitting the reg, and I had to hone the air cylinder in the area that the main O ring sits. Now it's holding pressure and getting very good results. I truly believe regulators should be on ALL PCP guns.
