Buy what you can when you can

I have been checking out the local *Super* Walmart from time to time looking for CPUM 10.5 pellets with no luck. Quite a while back, I found that the 10.5 Piranha pellets did *almost* as good, but had many more fliers and the groups were not as good in general. Note that I shoot at 750fps or less with these pellets. Above 750fps in my guns, they don't do very good with the exception of my now unusable (in present condition) Nova Freedoms which shot them well at ~740 and ~920+fps with the turn of a knob.

Anyway, I have given up finding the CPUM 10.5 pellets, but today they had 6 tins of Piranhas (400 count) for $7 each. I bought them all and will continue to buy all they have when they have them.

I may have to lower the fps a little more to get reliable groups, but for my pesting purposes in my back yard, even ~12fpe may be too much. (grin)

I believe that I can find a velocity that the Piranhas like well enough to use them for pesting and that may end up being well under 700fps. I'll let you know... (grin)

Try washing and Lubing them too. A friend of mine got better accuracy out of the .22 cphp just from lubricating them with silicone wd40. I’m going to try this myself and see if it helps. They’re useless out of my leshiy, but my urban likes them and so does my tx200

I wash them and then test to see if lubing is necessary. If it seems lubing *might* help, I have 2 methods. One is to spray them with aerosol silicon lubricant and agitate them while the aerosol accelerant dries. The other is to put a small amount of silicon lube (same as I use on the guns) in a zip-lock plastic bag with the pellets and massage them gently.

Both methods seem to produce equivalent results, but lubing does not always produce better results. So far I have never had negative results from lubing, but I have seen where it made little to no difference in groupings/accuracy. It is all trial and error. (smile)

Thanks!

The monster redesigns and heavies i got, i did get in 4 tin purchases, but since then i have been a considerate guy and just gotten 2 tins at the time of other pellets and slugs i have ordered.

I must admit i have contemplated renouncing my socialist tendencies and order in more selfish amounts going forward, if i overstock i can always sell on ( at cost of course, i am not that kind of a beast ).

There is nothing greedy about being prepared.

I'll stick to my buy a couple here, buy a couple there routine. Something I've been doing since I got back into air guns 6 1/2 years ago. While I have a healthy stock in the 4 calibers I have guns in, it's a habit I still have and I'm not going to panic if I can't find something I want to add a couple tins of. They'll show up sooner or later :)

That is a good strategy if you have a good supply already. Not so good if you are trying to attain a good supply that will carry you over the times when availability is scarce. LIKE NOW!!!

Those who wait until they are on their last tin of pellets are simply not planning ahead... i.e. not being prepared!

As I said, there is nothing greedy about being prepared. Nor is there anything greedy about attempting to be prepared.

Happy that you are prepared! (smile)

How far are your shooting? Try around 650FPS, with over 10 grain of weight they still packs a punch. Since my yard is small I have not issues with 7.4 and 7.9 grain crosman pellets but I go for headshots only with them. I also have a couple guns setup for hades in case I need to take a vital shot. For target and plinking it’s strictly cheapest crosman pellets and they are actually very effective as long as I take head shots only, I’ve dropped a squirrel with 7.4 pointed pellet @ only 520fps out of my challenger at just under 20 yards.

mid you can take headshots and don’t shoot pass 30 yards the 7.4 pointed pellets are well worth a look, many arboreal rodents have fell asleep by it. Keep in mind their BC is rather horrible so wind has huge affect on them or anything under 10 grain for that matter.

I plan to gradually step down from 750fps until they start to group well. Even at 10 meters I have never had any luck with pellets under 10 grains. When I tried the 10.5 CPUM and found that they were very accurate (at ~12fpe and ~20fpe) out of my old Nova Vista Freedoms, I have never looked back at the lighter pellets. Fortunately the CPUMs also do pretty well in the Fortitude, although not nearly as good as they did in the Freedoms. Having said that, back when I had access to pest @ 60 yards all the time, I was taking chipmunks with head shots at 55-60 yards with the Fortitude using the CPUMs, but I did miss more often than I did with the Freedoms.

7.4 and 7.9 pellets never have done well for me at any distance except with pistols shooting ~400-600fps.

Finally tested the Piranhas in the Fortitude. Well, at ~750fps, they were GREAT... until they weren't. First 4 shots were hole in hole at 10 meters then the fliers started and they were not off by a little. After 30 rounds (3 mags) I quit testing at this velocity. Too many fliers, but if not for the (too many) fliers they did group very good. (sigh)

This might be a case where the Yrrah roll test might help. The groups (without the fliers) were as good and sometimes better than the CPUM 10.5s at 10 meters, so identifying the reason for the fliers and eliminating those pellets may be the key, but I am not optimistic that I will be able to identify/find the reason for the fliers.

Still have not tried to adjust the regulator on the .177 DAR Gen2. Debating on sending it back before I void the warranty.

@backstop this is why I am thinking of doing a serious stock up of pellets 177 to 25 cal and maybe some 30 cal too, when I am in the Netherlands in October. I can order from Krale and have shipped to location in Netherlands, shipping is included. Then include the pellets in a bulk shipment of some of my stuff I am planning. I know Krale shipping costs for pellets is nuts, but if I don’t have to pay it or order from another Euro dealer then I am not as effected by the cost and I already have the plane ticket.

The bulk would arrive near end of year, but for now I am pretty good to go and like you said buy while you can.

Sounds like a good plan to me! Fortunately or unfortunately for me, all of the airguns I own shoot the CPUMs very well, so I have never developed a stock of other brands and now that it is harder to get them and the prices are up, I am trying harder to make do with what I have.

Fortunately, a few years ago I bought about 20,000 CPUMs, boxed and in tins. Don't know how many I have left as I have not inventoried them lately, but I should be good for quite a while as slowly as I normally go through them. The Piranhas are disappointing so far, but you never know. Maybe they will work better at a slower/different velocity or a different gun. I have about 7,200 of them now. (chuckle)
