When I swab out to clean some of my springer barrels, sometimes get a black residue on the swabs or brush that smells burnt. What is happening and if needed how do I correct this?

Hi Dark1961. In my experience when you clean the bore of most springer type airguns you will see a dark residue on the cleaning patch (or whatever cleaning medium you use).
Often this is made up of residue off the pellet, or the burning of lube from the spring or piston. This is quite common, and generally speaking is nothing to worry about.
If the amount of residue is significant it could indicate that the gun has too much lube on the internal workings, or there is wear that is allowing the lube to reach the face of the piston seal. A good sign of this issue is that you will often see smoke coming from the bore when you fire the gun.
There are a lot of opinions about the need to clean the bore on an airgun, that are worth you taking time out to read. I hope that this explanation assists. Richardo.

The term "burnt" brings up a bad memory. I get the image of my $99.99 Turkish Tomahawk Special. Out of the box it was so gawd awful that it gave me a headache after only 25 or so shots.
People have referred to this type of gun as a "Problem Child" ...after unsuccessfully trying everything to get it to behave,I sent it away to live with a relative. From what I have heard,they don't feed it and keep it locked up in the basement.

Sounds like they are dieseling. You just have to shoot until it goes away. YES OUCH!
Make sure not to use too much solvent to clean your barrel and use several dry patches following that.
Maybe even stop using any solvents in the barrel and just use dry patches to clean until your burn free.
Use Goo Gone if you must but very sparingly on the cleaning patches. Pull through with dry patches.
Don't lube your springers. This may be the result of lubing them when not necessarily needed or over lubing.
Put one drop of chamber lube once in a great moon perhaps in your case maybe even after 10,000 rounds
since it seems as though your guns on the "greasy" side unless all of your springers in question are still
breaking in at the moment which I would say would be closer to the norm.
