BSA GRT Lightning .25 ~~ Pellet Rolling Result

I have this BSA Lightning GRT in .25 cal. I don't really know why I get so much pleasure out of this rifle. It doesn't shoot very hard. It isn't terribly accurate. I really enjoy the feel of the rifle in my hands. It is a short, handy rifle and accurate enough to hunt squirrels out to about 40 yards. Given it's power level that's about right. It is just a handy, practical rifle for shooting squirrels in deep woods. It would also be a good choice for people who want to keep pests down in suburbia. It is a 40 yard rifle.

It really is very consistent rifle, even though I say it isn't accurate. Here is a chrony test I took about a month ago. The weather was warmer and the gun was shooting about 20 fps slower than it is now that we have cooler weather.

Anyway, I decided to sort a tin of H&N FTTs and run the test with that rifle. Here are the results of that test. Just the data and everything you need to duplicate the test if you so desire. Bin #1 only produced 22 pellets and Bin #5 did not produce enough pellets to even be included in the shoot.

I sorted the pellets into bins which were 9mm wide, just a millimeter or so longer than a pellet. I collected these pellets into five bins. I arranged things so the largest number would drop into bin three. That resulted in a nice normal curve centered on bin three, exactly what I needed.

I then waited for calm or nearly calm conditions and shot 4 targets with five, five shot groups on each target. I photographed those 4 targets and pulled them into my On Target software so that I could construct aggregate groups for each bin.

It appears to like the pellets that roll into bin four, doesn't it?

Here is the pertinent bits of that data graphed.

YMMV

I was looking for one of these in .22, but BSA seems to have totally disappeared.

There is no importer that I know of in the US. The rifle would be a joy in 177 or 22. It has as good a shot cycle with the gas ram as my tuned by John in PA Diana's have.

It's never been tuned. I think if some company were to import them into the US and the Fanboys didn't just dump all over them and gave the gun a chance they'd find out that it's a good value for the dollar.

I know I like mine. Is absolutely stones them squirrels when head shot at about 35 yards with that 25 caliber pellet.

I would love a Lightning. I have a Polaris .22, very accurate and hard hitter. Enjoy Crow

I wish I could get another one in 177 or 22. I looked into buying a separate barrel but couldn't find a parts house that would sell me a barrel for it.

I think that particular rifle would be an absolutely fantastic 177 squirrel gun.

I recall some GRT Lightnings in .25 on Amazon and Airgun Megastore about six months ago. They went pretty fast. The only reason I didn't snap one up was because I wasn't sure if the power level could handle .25. In retrospect, that was incorrect, the GRT Lightning is a premium, lightweight hunting rifle intended for short range.

This brings me to a pet peeve. I would like to see some smaller, premium springers/gasrams from Gamo, Hatsan, Umarex, SIG, etc. I'm not concerned with price but with high build quality. That includes high handling quality.

Sure, the big magnums are fun, but It seems nowadays the only premium small guns are Weihrauchs.

+1

It seems like ol' Doc Beeman really did know what he was talking about when it came to spring guns.

I don't know why we aren't seeing offerings of quality gas adjustable gas rams. The shot cycle is smoother than a spring and the adjustability would sell rifles.

Shot these today. I pulled out the BSA and found a batch of pellets from the day I started this thread in the gun case. They were from batch number four. I had a target set up at 20 yards and so shot them all on it starting with a cold bore. First time this rifle has been shot since the day that the thread was created.

Here is the target:
