Broke my own rule... and paid the price

The rule is to never leave a gun on the bags in shooting position to avoid it tipping over. Well I was shooting my HW44 and had it nestled in the bags really good and decided it would be safe. No sir! It tipped over as I watched from a distance and fell off the bench onto the deck and snapped the moderator off. I’m hoping the scope is fine, and I’ll definitely shoot for accuracy without the moderator today and see if it still shoots straight. I do believe that I’ll go ahead and follow the rule from now on. On a good note it was a successful

shooting session, got a chipmunk and a fly lol! Don’t leave them guns on the bags like I shouldn’t have!!

Happened to me the other day off caldwell bags, thank god it stayed on the table. Just a scratch on top of the scope bell. I learned real quick in that moment. Never again. So used to using the led sled for my powder burners or a mid-evil bipod or precision turret swivel on the airguns that I just didn't think about it. Man what a bummer, sorry to see that damage. I hope it works out in the end and it doesn't cost too much to get fixed up.

Ouch that has to hurt! Said the critter, the fly and the gun.

Last time I had that happen to me I was lucky. My Impact was on my Primos tripod and I was across the room. One of the legs collapsed and the gun crashed to the ground bouncing off of a chair and conveniently landing on a pile of cardboard boxes that I had just broken down for recycling. No damage to the gun but I don't trust my Primos tripod any more.

The time before that I was not so lucky. I was at the range with my S&W M&P15 and a guy came to the bench to the left of me with his AR and set up to shoot. His first volley left casings flying my way and one went down the front of my shirt. It was still plenty hot and burning me. I jumped up and took a couple of steps back because of the shells and the concussion, which was excessive to say the least, from his short barreled AR. Left my gun sitting on the bag on the bench. He fired a few more shots and over went my gun, tumbling off of the bench, hitting the stool on its way to the concrete. I grabbed at the gun on it's way down but it was to far to reach. When the shots stopped and I picked it up I noticed that the elevation cap on my brand new scope had been caved in a but there was no other damage that I could plainly see. After the guilty party moved over and put a bench between us I fired off a few more rounds and found the scope to be right on so no damage I thought. Later when I got home I went to take the damaged cap off but it wouldn't budge. So I got out the channel locks out wrapped the cap in a piece of leather and broke it loose. After unscrewing it I looked down and noticed that what I had in my hand was the whole turret. So much for my new scope.

A few days later I sheepishly approached Primary arms about the damage to the scope telling them in all honesty exactly how it happened. They said send it in. Got it back in ten days good as new and was not charged a penny for the werq. Now that is service!

I changed scopes on the gun a few of months later and left it laying on the bench when I hurriedly took off for home. Went back for it but it was gone. 😪 Poor Poor me in the first world. I had left my my blue $1000 dollar 2240 sitting on a bench one day some months earlier and it was turned in so, I got it back. Guess I was just lucky that time. My memory has improved vastly in the last couple of years. It was pretty trashed out for several years after a brain injury.

When it’s just “stuff” we all have to consider ourselves fortunate. I’ve had my fair share but no one has been hurt. This is like riding motorcycles. They say everyone goes down sooner or later. I rode some for years and never really did . BUT I was smart enough to give it up when I reached about 65. THEN I took up air guns. You almost have to be obsessive about safety and even then. My biggest screw ups are when I’m tired and rushing. Typically it involves a car and REVERSE GEAR. Followed by bad words.

I just ordered a new moderator from AOA and it wasn’t cheap! $112 with shipping lol. I’m going to lay the gun down flat and never leave it upright on the bags again. I can still hear that awful sound of it hitting the deck ha ha. The moderator broke up the tube a little bit, but in a clean line so I tried to super glue it. It was clipping pellets though so I gave up.
