Brocock Ranger XR .177 fresh from AoA

.177 Brocock Ranger XR

It is basically a Brocock Atomic with a (small) 0 db moderator, picatinny rails all over it, and a folding AR style stock.

I was in the market for a new "low power" truck gun and I have to thank my buddy Mike B. (Team Centercut) and the good folks at AoA for all their help getting this to me. While it was on the way, I watched Steve's(AEAC youtube channel) video on the .22 Brocock Atomic again, so I would be familiar with how the gun works. Upon arrival, I ran 3 Patchworms thru it(pretty clean from factory), mounted a scope and bipod, put the FX Chrony on it, and started shooting JSB 8.44g. The .177 magazine is the new "Daystate style"(front flip door) magazine and holds 13 pellets. The short 0 db does a descent job, but the longer one(or a DonnyFL Tanto, or Huggett Astille, or...) makes it REALLY quiet.

It was shooting the 8.4g @ 758 fps, so I tightened on the hammerspring to bring it up to almost 800 fps, which is about all this small sub 12 ft lb .177 was designed to do. I got 3 mags(39 shots) before I had to refill. They include a male threaded probe, as well as, a barrel endcap(in case you don't want to use the moderator)with the gun.

The trigger was pulling heavy(2.5 lbs) with a long 1st stage out of the box, so I adjusted the creep out of the 1st stage and the break to 1.5 lbs.

I tried JSB Heavy 10.34g which did well out to about 30-40 yards where I could see them start spiraling and getting blown by wind. JSB 13.4g Monsters(and RDs) were even worse. H&N Barracuda Match and Extremes showed promise, but I don't have too many of those(I will get more and revist later). The best results of what I tried were the JSB 8.4g:

PROS(so far):

Wellmade- solid, plenty of sturdy pic rails, no flexing, nice mag, buttery smooth action, AR accessory(grip, stock, etc.. ready)

Very light and very compact

Accurate(enough for my pesting/plinking needs anyway)

Quiet(especially with bigger moderator)

CONS-

The way you have to fold the collapsible stock- OH MY FRIGGIN GOD!!!! You have to twist it(like a doorknob) WHILE lifting up on the stock and pushing down on the receiver. If you don't do it just right, it binds. The same way in reverse to unfold it(it locks in the folded position). Why can't I just push a button??

Low power, low shot count- Well, it isn't supposed to be a powerhouse slug-shooter with a 580cc bottle, SO I guess that's not REALLY a CON. It is excellent for what it is designed to be.

Thanks again to Centercut and AoA for their help in getting me what I wanted!

Here's some more pics:

Blackpaw,

The Differences are the Ranger has pic scope rail, pic side rails(for mounting lights, lasers, etc..), 0 db moderator included, as well as, the folding stock. Also, just looks and feels "beefier".

The Atomic MAY be a better value for some. The Atomic wouldn't stay put where I wanted on the front seat of my truck without that folding stock. THAT is what I needed, so I bought the Ranger. With the stock folded, it will sit on top the front seat, my center console, or even fit up on the dash fine. For a quick close shot, I don't even need to unfold it. It may be a "niche" thing. To be fair, price wasn't a big factor in my decision to buy it. I'm having a blast learning it and looking forward to pesting with it.

Nice. I have the atomic. I think I have the same bipod. I have a leopold 0-6x scope and the huggett atom suppressor on mine. Atom on the atomic... :) I have the air superiority hammer adjustment for the carbine on it. It has upped my shot count quite a bit by dropping the power slightly. I know you like the folding stock but if you change you mind and would like more adjustability or shot count its nice to have.

It may not be bad that the folding stock takes a bit of effort. The folding stock on my FX dreamtac is ridiculously easy to fold and sometimes it comes undone at the wrong time.

as for speed, I was able to hit 910 FPS with H&N green wadcutters.

A couple things I forgot to mention:

I was was shooting with the 3 position Transfer Port switch on the maximum(most open) setting. The middle setting lowered about 50 fps. The lowest setting took off another 100 fps off(approx 150 fps lower than max setting.

The Ranger was designed to be a great backpack gun(ultra light, compact, and rugged). And with the <100cc tube, it is a hand-pumpers dream.

L.Leon,

Definitely a good choice if your champion rat-killer Brocock Bantam ever wants a little brother. Lol

pcwhite,

I HAD a Dream tact compact. Totally agree with you about the folding stock flopping around being a less than ideal.

Thanks for the tip on the H&N greens. They would be perfect for close range plinking/pesting in this gun.

I love the little Ranger, so much so that it's getting harder to go back to my Wildcat and especially the Impact , mainly due it's size/weight though, but it is a high quality build, really accurate and very quiet too in .22... I feel FX's Impact Compact MK 4 needs to go down to this size...

My only complaint also is the folding stock. I only got mine to fold twice so far in two days and it was no easy feat. Something is definitely wrong with mine, I think the spring is just too stiff. I was on the phone with AOA and he tried to help/troubleshoot and ended up sending me out a new stock today with a prepaid return for mine. I'll post back when the new one arrives, but Jared did say there is a huge variation on how they fold, he's seen some really really tough ones too...
