Brocock Bantam Tuning

Here is the ssh out of my Bantam .22 inner screw is .25 above the outer hammer!!!

I stripped my Bantam down last night to look for the leaky pin valve. Attached is a photo of the valve return spring (compared to my Compatto). It was stuck on the valve pin, angled to the side a bit, and was 0.059" wire diameter. I could not even compress it with my fingers. I suspect that is why the SSH is not working and everyone winds up with a protruding screw - too much force to overcome with both the spring and air pressure. A trip to the hardware store today yielded a 0.026" wire diameter spring 1" long, by 0.24" OD. I think that this was even a bit too much. I played around with a bunch of hammer springs and hammer pin settings and come to the following conclusions:
  • For a SSH system, the valve return spring is way too massive to have everything work together properly.
  • If you have the hammer screw out at all beyond the inner hammer, you will defeat the slingshot hammer and get hammer bounce (unless you have a short strong spring). I adjusted the hammer screw back to the point, where when the outer hammer is resting on the stop, the inner hammer is just not touching the valve pin.
  • If the hammer screw is adjusted past the point where the inner hammer is off the pin, it really is only acting like one large hammer - hence the SSH may really just be a marketing tool on the as-shipped rifles.
  • If the SSH is backed off the valve pin, as designed, then you can go with a preloaded spring and get decent efficiencies.
  • The SSH is really no better than a short strong spring, based on other setups that I have done. Due to the heavy valve return spring (even the lighter one I used), you need a heavier spring effort to get the energy up enough to crack the valve with the small inner hammer. I was hoping for easier cocking effort with the SSH, but to get the velocities up, I wound up with a longer heavier spring than the factory one with quite a bit of preload.
  • The Brocock is really easy to work on and simple to diagnose.

I wound up with a similar setup to my previous tune: 55 shots from 180 to 150 bar at 19.1 fpe (800 fps JSB 13.43) for 1.2 fpe/ci. The neat thing though on the current setup, is that the starting and ending velocities were all the same, with just 17 fps variation over the 55 shots. I am anxious to try the setup with the MkII JSB's coming in the mail later this week. Unfortunately, I still had a bit of a leaky valve - not sure what the cause was, as I was using the valve pin out of my working Compatto.

So I did quite a bit of troubleshooting this weekend on the Bantam. A couple of full disassemblies and I think that I have the valve leak resolved - I suspect there is a burr or the valve taper was cut a bit wrong. Anyway, first couple of string no leaks. The leaks do not amount to much, but annoying. Here's the upshot:
  • I opened up the transfer hole to 0.133 (3/4 of .177), but not the barrel or the power adjuster.
  • I kept the much lighter valve spring (.026″ wire diameter spring 1″ long), though it did not want to seat on the initial fill - I had to dry fire a couple of time to get the valve to close.
  • Based on the slow motion videos and heavy cocking effort, I ditched the SSH in favor of a short strong spring. I had to drop back to the 0.054" spring, due to the higher speeds from the transfer port opening. Now easy to cock, which is what I wanted.
  • The hammer screw is 0.062 above the inner hammer top.

The tune turned out to be pretty good: 827 to 800 fps (3.3% var), 65 shots on 30 bar (180 to 150) for 19.7 fpe at 1.46 fpe/ci. I might have to up the fpe a bit for the JSB Monster MKII's, since they are shooting about 10fps slower than the MKI's. Supposed to warm up this week, so hopefully some range time in decent weather.

I knew something else was in there also causing the low efficiency, nice job increasing it. I can see me getting into my Compatto as I think it should be at least 1.5fpe/cuin.

So you still have the SSH in there, but adjusted it was in? and it is in "free flight" with the .054 spring? (no preload)
 
AoA has a great video on degassing a Daystate, which has the same bottle bracket. Basically loosening the guage, but you have to be careful not to unscrew too far. Once the gas is gone, there are two set screws holding the bottle bracket in the correct orientation. Loosen those about 2 turns or less then unscrew the bottle bracket.

BTW you have to remove the trigger guard,trigger, scope riser, and barrel to take off the tank. I found that the scope riser was the worst, as the screws were like butter and really tightened down. I wound up replacing them with better M4-0. 7x16 screws from the local hardware store. 
 
Unfortunately Huma does not make a regulator for a bottle gun yet. I suspect the regulator is built into the valve body of the new Bantams. Altaros makes a bottle regulator, but I am not sure that I need one - 2 to 3% variance over 65+ shots is pretty good. Plus the Brocock's have a small transfer port, which means you really need a higher regulator pressure to be effective. That in turn means you get less performance and "freeboard" capacity, though you can have higher fill pressures.

Tonight, I shot from 195 Bar down to 145 bar in 30 deg temps before I saw a POI change over 95 shots. At that point I was too cold to do any more. 
 
After reading about the valve return spring you found I decided to take apart my Compatto. This valve spring is CRAZY heavy. I put in the smallest spring I could find and here is what happened. (I didn't open up the passages as I am getting plenty of power)
I took my spare SSH and turned it into a solid hammer by removing the spring and putting washers so that the hammer was just flush with the cage. I then put a really strong spring in back to hammer doesn't move. With this I was able to put in a .059 spring 1.75" long so hammer is now in free flight and easier to cock.
My fill pressure is now 3300 instead of 3400. My average velocity went up 20fps and I now get 36 shots w/i 4%.
And the gun is quieter, you can't hear the wasted air anymore. Much "snappier" report.

I don't as I got it from my spring box. I think it came in the Harbor Freight box of various compression springs they sell. It's not much bigger then a ball point pen spring.

The original was .70' long .27"OD and .048 wire
I cut the new spring the same length. It is .20' OD and .022 wire

The original was loose on the poppet and the new one slides on and stays put.

What I couldn't believe is how easy these guns are to work on. Degas, unscrew tube and the "valve cover" drops right out with a little shaking allowing access to the poppet and spring.

I turn my hammer screw back in a little and now I am getting 30 shots at an average of 907fps with the 15.9JSB's ES 35 (3.9%) The middle 22 shots are have an ES of 20 (2.1%)

IF you want one of those .59 wire short springs just let me know.
 
I got a lighter one at the local hardware store. Also one from a click pen works ok too. You have to be careful, as under 100 bar, the hammer preload can open the valve and dump the air. Here are some springs that might work as well.

I have been shooting the 177 Bantam tune lately - weather is not cooperating with wind, so groups are not so good yet. I did have to take it apart to fix a valve leak, again. There is a slight raise/lip/bump just before the valve seat, where the poppet is getting hung up. This is probably why it was sold. Anyway, I rounded the valve seat on the poppet and less leaks are noticed. I wound up having to re-tune the rifle AGAIN, and tone it down a bit - it was shooting 886 fps with the 13.43 JSB Monsters MK1 for over 23 fpe. 

Below is a set of curves from my simulated shot count tonight (only fired a pellet every 10 shots or so). The run tonight was 250 shots from 246 to 117 Bar. I figure if I run from 200 to 122 Bar, I can get 170 full power (18 to 20 fpe) shots at less than 3% variation - who needs a regulator with this efficiency. If I wanted another 40 shots, I could run 225 to 200 bar at medium power for roughly the same speed as full power below 200 Bar. I have tried the lighter pellets at medium power and it is doing quite well - JSB 10.34 at 860 to 870 fps. This gun is amazing!

I think that the SSH is too small to work in the FAC guns. Remember that since the hammer is 2 pieces and the outer piece gets stopped the hammer energy is from the momentum that the inner hammer is able to build by being "slung" thru the outer part. In order for the SSH to operate efficiently (as it's supposed to) the hammer pin has to be retracted to a point that it does not rest on the valve stem when uncocked. When I adjust mine to this point it is only pushing the 15.9's to like 500fps.
With the .059 spring, at 1.75" long (plus 4 small washers - hammer in free flight) I was only able to get the the SSH up to about 600fps (iirc) with the 15.9's. By using washers and a thicker spring to make the hammer essentially a single piece I can max out the 15.9's at about 970fps, but from there it's a declining string. So I changed to 3 small washers and the 1.75" spring to start at 895 and peak at 923 starting at 3300psi.
I was lucky to get an extra hammer with my gun so I could leave my one tuned as best I could so that if locking the hammer didn't work I didn't have to go thru all the adjustments again. Just swap hammers and springs.
