Brocock Bantam still having a magazine problem

I hope your problem is fixed. I had the same experience with a Bantam, and ended up selling it, with full disclosure to the buyer. He never uses a mag, so it didn't matter to him, and the rifle shot great without the mag (after AOA replaced the original barrel). Seems to me, if the breech needs chamfering, then there is a problem with the proper alignment of the pellet when feeding from the magazine. Chamfering the barrel might improve performance, but it seems to be treating the symptom, not the problem, which remains the magazine system. I have two rifles that shoot as well with the magazine as without it, an FX Royale 400, and a Taipan Veteran. The Royale is spring loaded, the Veteran is not. I expect it is difficult to design a magazine system that consistently feeds soft lead pellets without damage, but some makers have done it, and one would think Daystate/Brocock would have that ability.

Only a few of you are having this problem, and in the case of the OP the gun is clearly as witnessed by his posted groups. Not shooting up to par with or without the magazine. I use three magazines through two different guns, accuracy as posted in my groups. Elh0102, you stated you shot single loaded.125” at 25 yards that went to .300” when you use the magazine. That was your example. I better play the lotto because all three of my magazines work and shoot just fine. Also there’s got to be more than half a dozen Bantam owners. If this was the problem many, many other owners would chime in. At most I’ve only seem the few complaints here on this non magazine issue.

Probably true, I can only report my experience. However, I have noticed that Daystate has redesigned their magazine, so maybe more than a few have had a similar experience.

You make light of the fact you stated that the barrel on your Bantam was replaced and keep going back to the mags as the culprit. I don’t see in the XR literature where they state they’ve “redesigned” the magazines. I shoot my Bantam almost everyday and would certainly like to think I would notice a practical difference in accuracy, mag or SST, but that hasn’t been the case. Just watched an American Airgunner video on the Concept Lite XR. He is casually grouping at 50 yards and hitting lifesaver mints at 100 yards. All shots from the magazine.

I started this discussion over a year old but since it's been brought back to life I'll do an update. My Bantam has been fine since Kip at AOA worked on the barrel, with or without the magazine it's very accurate. Pretty much one hole out to 50 yards. I haven't done much past that as the Bantam tends to be my backyard gun. Recently I bought a Sniper HP .25 and the accuracy is good with or without the magazine.

Brocock magazines are different than the Daystate and remain unchanged. Daystate did a redesign on theirs but I haven't heard anyone comment on their results with it. While the old anti-double load magazine is usually not as accurate as single loading, the bigger issue is the metal to metal contact from the actuator causing pellet probe damage. I've asked on the Daystate site and AOA Facebook page if the new magazine solves the damage problem, but have yet to get a response from either.

When I had the pellet probe replaced at AOA on my Renegade about a year ago, I was told about the forthcoming redesign. According to them, Daystate said it had nothing to do with the probe damage issue (which they refuse to admit is an issue at all), but that it was to make a lower priced magazine for the consumer.

Clearly that isn't the case as the redesigned price is the same as the old one, $99.

I am having the same issue with my Brocock Bantam Sniper Magnum HR Patigonia in .25 cal. At 50 yards it looks like the JSB Hades are flying sideways? They hit the paper plate and the hole they leave is not round but more like oval? I used to shoot archery and would shoot the arrow through paper to see if it was fish tailing or proposing! In this instance the pellet hole looks like proposing? Groups at 30 are okay, not great. At 50 yards all over the place! Been told to shoot the Hades and JSB 25 grains at a slower speed? Shooting at 945 fps average, so I'll try a lower power setting and check all I've learned in this post!

Thanks!

I have the same problem on my Brocock Bantam mk2 and found this thread very interesting. I had thought the breach entry is to blame myself, I was considering rowan engineering single shot loader but i may get this looked at now, my groups look like op @ 28yards. I would like to use the mag if possible so I may go down that road first.

Any close up pics of the breach would be appreciated to compare.

I'm afraid that getting a good really picture is not going to happen. This is the best that I could do.

Thank you both for your quick reply's.

@emu when you say by hand, i am assuming you mean hand operated drill (not a powered drill)? Did you polish it after it has been opened up, if so what did you use for this? How much did you take out would you estimate? 1mm wider at the breach then chamfering in?

Sorry to pick your brains just wanted to try and get as much information before I attempt the fix.

I will strip the mag down today and open that up slightly, will take the barrel out etc and assess that before making any adjustment.

Thanks again

Three magazines in two Brococks over a four year span zero problems. Guess I got lucky. Though 95% of the time I'm single loading, I have groups 5 shots into MOA and sub MOA at 50 yards from the magazines. And when pesting with shots from 30 to 100 yards I always use the magazines. Like I said I'm a lucky fellow.

You are. And I think most owners have good results with the mag. Unfortunately, that doesn't help the few with problems, which can be frustrating. In most cases, it seems some careful tool or machine work can alleviate the problem. But, one should not have to find a work-around to compensate for poor quality control, or, to complete the finishing work left undone. My HW100 and Veteran both shoot perfectly from the mag, with no accuracy loss at all. Both use sturdy, mechanical advance systems, no springs in volved, and no movement of parts in the magazine. Obviously, the Brocock/Daystate magazines can work well, but I think it is a weaker design.
