Break in period for Benjamin bulldog?

I bought a BD on Amazon a couple months ago for a little more than $600 and straight out of the box, I could not get any of the Air Venturi slugs (127 grain to group worth a hoot. Consistently around 4 - 5 inches at 50 yards. The Benjamin Noslers were better, groups about half that size. After seeing many posts recommending the NSA 142 grain slugs, I bought some and went to the range. Groups of 1 inch or less are common at 50 yards and I managed to get a 3 shot group slightly over 1 inch at 100 yards. The 4th shot would always drop around 2 inches low. FPS was kind of slow, here is a good average 5 shot string:

Yeah, I did some baseline chrony testing the other day and if I get time tomorrow and the weather cooperates I’ll get some more. Basically with 127gr A/V roundnose slugs I was getting 767fps. I turned the hammer spring in 4 turns after reading a thread on noebulletmolds.com and got 793fps avg. this is a 10 shot string, 5 with stock hammer and 5 with the turns in. I’m sure when I refill prior to each 5 instead the #’s with the spring turned in will be higher. I also have a few hundo slugs on order and will be testing them for accuracy. The velocity isn’t my primary focus as is accuracy. Nearing 200ft/lbs is fine for pretty much any game around here.

Hi etnhunter,

I designed the NOE .357 target and hunting bullet to cast at 148gr in 1:40 alloy for shooting in higher powered rifles like Slayers, Texans and.... Pitbulls!

I designed the bullet for ease of chambering / rifling engagement, good bore guidance length with the length of side contact and bore ride nose, the narrow lands n wide grooves were to lengthen and lighten the bullet and reduce bore friction and the shortened gas check base is because it acts as good or better than a boat tail at subsonic and leaves the last band sharp for exiting the muzzle even if the actual rebated base had cast slightly imperfect or got a ding which often hurts accuracy in flat base bullets.

I plan to hunt deer and hogs with so it has a massive hollowpoint and my testing in gelatin showed good expansion and penetration at air rifle velocities.

Al made a batch of 10 molds and they sold out in days but if you ask he could run you off another one.

Also:

I also got Bob (AKA - rsterne) to modify his never made BBT (Bob's BoatTail) .357 because it was just too heavy and had him make it a bore rider for good bore guidance and low bore friction. Then got NOE to make that one too and it has also proven to shoot well in Pitbulls. Still some of those in stock and some guys over at GTA have been pleased with them.

The swaged NSA 142gr are great and I've shot a lot of them (and totally recommend them to non-casters) but they have a bit more bore friction due to the smooth sides and that drops FPS some. Compensated for by it's lower weight able to be pushed a tiny bit faster. All cast bullets have minute imperfections and have to be sorted, weighed and culled but can achieve excellent accuracy. The swaged are perfectly balanced with no voids or poor fillout so each has it's place and good accuracy. I cast because I can get the same accuracy at cheaper cost because I shoot too much to be able to shoot only Nick's excellent NSA slugs all the time.

Here's the link to that bullet ( it casts 152 gr in 1:40 alloy)

Can you send me some samples of each? I will pay you for them. I have been contemplating casting my own. Send me a PM please.

So I got some 95gr/105gr FB Slugs from NSA. So far I’m very impressed. Here’s a 5 shot string at 100yds:

If it weren’t for this last two I pulled......I got excited after the 3 stacked and lost my concentration. I had intended on shooting that coke can full of water but the shrapnel kinda took care of that. Lol.

besides the barrel supports, sportsman trigger, depinger and one shot tray from Pitbull I have a Donny FL Emperor and adaptor coming soon. When I install those I’ll re-test again. Then I’ll do the ports depending on the performance.

The feral pigs aren’t up here (yet). But based on looking at maps from 1985-current I’d wager they’ll be here within 10 years or so. I’m not looking forward to it as we’ve already got a pretty good ‘yote population given our semi-rural area. My neighbor asks me all the time to bait and dispatch them, they’ve been killing his chickens. I told him it probably wouldn’t do much good, we were out on my deck the other evening having a little bourbon by the fireplace and we could definitely hear 3-4 good sized packs howling at each other from distinct separate locations. Eventually they’ll find a way into his coop even if I did take out a few of them.
