The only time I can use the 100-250 yard lanes at the range when no firearms are around is when Val takes me. Shes an RSO there so has access whenever she wants. She also is granted special privileges because she primarily shoots airguns these days.
At any rate, I need to practice as much as I can for the next Trenier 100 match, as well as an up coming fun shoot, and she felt well enough to go today, and had no work.
I was doing OK considering I've only been shooting airguns for a very short time, and I was shooting an Impact which is totally a different experience compared to shooting the Crown.
I was consistently shooting 10 shot groups less than 2" and a few near 1.5". There was absolutely no wind at all.
I was fully expecting a great deal of ribbing as she is a much better shot with an airgun due to more experience, and she was shooting her Crown with weighed pellets.
I started hearing her swear a bit. Not unusual for her, in fact I'm quite sure she'd make a sailor blush in normal conversation. Pretty soon she was damn near screaming everytime she shot. I asked what her malfunction was. She told me to F-off and leave her alone. Discretion being the better part of valor, I did just that.
We shoot 50 yard rim fire targets that have 25 targets, and 3 sighters. Much smaller than used at 75 or 100 yard airgun matches. We were shooting 100 yards today. After a while it was time to walk down and bring back the targets for her to look at, then change them.
Her groups were 4 to 5 inches. It was obvious why she was bitching so much.
Out came the cleaning kit, out came the barrel liner, and she proceeded to clean the barrel all the while asking me what I had done to her precious Crown after I bought it from her. I assure her I had not done anything, that I hadn't got around to it before she guilted me into trading for her pink monstrosity. She didn't believe me of course.
Until she noticed that she had the hammer spring wheel set on 2 because she had been shooting in her backyard, which I know for a fact she remembered before shooting because I saw her cranking on the top turret before a shot was fired.
I put new targets out and she got to shoot 2 very good groups before it started to rain. Another torrent of foul language signaled the end of our target practice today. Although she did get one more extraordinary shot, that I refuse to comment about.
I guess the point of the story, other than the primary reason which is to tweak Valerie, is that even someone that has shot for years, and countless pellets can, and will forget the most basic things.
