Best hog shot placement

Hi there,

i am new to hunting hogs with an Airgun. I just got a Texan SS and was wondering if a 240-290 grain bullet would be better or something like the 350 boat tail? The obvious answer is whichever shoots better out of your gun, but I was thinking also shot placement. Some folks say the heavier slug placed in the heart/lung area is more of a sure kill. Though some seem to use a lighter slug at a faster speed aiming for the brain. Which is more likely to produce a kill on a consistent basis? If going for a head shot, I’ve heard of different aiming places. A side shot just below the ear? Between the ear and the eye? Through the eye quartering back into the head? Behind the ear? From the front view slightly above between the eyes? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A hogs head has a steep angle and deflection can be an issue,

The spot in between the eye and the ear is the best head shot not actually behind the ear with least chance of deflection it is an instant lights out that will result in the pig freezing up and dropping like a rock with little or no noise

The problem with pigs is the organs sit much lower and forward than what most hunters are used to, you almost have to shoot through the shoulder to get a good double lung N heart shot. When you add that Boars will have a thick shield that you will have to deal with a good solid slug is for me the choice

For a good boiler plate shot shoot with the pig angled slightly away and shoot for the top most joint in the leg "elbow".

The heart starts at that top joint then moving up along the leg is the center of the lungs that reach to the curve of the front shoulder as long as your aimpoint is at the back of the front leg above the "elbow joint" and below the top of the shoulder curve you will hit vitals.

A face on boilerplate shot is possible but tricky many times if a pig senses or hears you he will face on and nose up to check for a scent, aim for 2 to 3 inches from the bottom of the V (150 pound)of his chest. I do not advise this shot unless you have had a chance to dress a pig out and see for yourself the heart as this will be your target.

The biggest problem is that we are no longer talking about a single breed of pigs, they can be the expected sharp angled black razer back or any other of the domestic breeds that have escaped and turned feral each has a different muscle and bone structure

Hi I hunt a lot me I would use a 350 gr and I would take heart shot , it is easier to hit deadly , Their are many vitals to kill instantly like brain , spine neck , head , but , best target is heart and lungs , Many times pigs travel in pacs and you always have more then 1 opportunity , It is much easier to hit a running animal in heart or head /

WHat did u get .457??? what is accuracy and how many shots per fill 8 ? do you practice your holdovers for each shot to hit same poi ? with small bores and regulators you get many shots all same poi, but with texan you need o learn hold points as every shot is a different firing solution

example

sighted in at 50 yds and shoot 100 yds first shot 4 mil hold second shot 5 1/2 mil hold ------------- 8 shot 10 mil hold

hope this helps LOU

Thanks for the info. I’m actually thinking of trying the 350g boat tail by NSA. I got the Texan SS from TalonTunes with the 4500 psi tank with future plans for the 97 cf carbon fiber tank from Expert HPA when I can save up enough. Now I have a scuba tank I can fill to 3500psi. I figure I will try to do most of my testing at 3000psi for now. So as far as data points, I have none as of yet. Since I expect that most of my shots will be 50 yards or less, I was going to sight in with the 350g slug at 50 yards and then figure where to hold for 20-25yards if there is much of a change. I figure I won’t hunt at 100 yds until I get much better. I was thinking with the 350g slug, I could go for either heart/lung area or if they stay still for a sec or 2, the 350g shot between the ear and eye area should be quite devastating. My 12 yr old nephew should probably go for the heart/lung shot until he develops the patience and skill to go for the brain shot.

With my airguns I strictly shoot head shots. Right under the ear or behind it is best for me. I have lost one pig from a shot quartering to me and shot between the eye and ear. That pig took off. We believe it’s dead since it has not been seen on camera since and something smells dead in the area. I have posted some of my hunts on here with video thru the scope and you can see my shot placement. I use a Texan SS.457 that is all stock.
