Benjamin Summit Gas piston Air Rifle

I just started shooting a Benjamin Summit Gas piston .177 rifle, I really didn't know what to expect seeing such a low price on a gas piston pellet rifle touting up to 1400 fps. Not to mention it came with a scope, a cheap one but none the less. So I mounted the rings and scope, went to my shooting gallery, and began shooting. Wow, it packs a wallop. When the pellets hit the trap. The scope was close on elevation, but windage was INCHES OFF, not just one, but at least 2. I dialed the scope L all the way in, I have never had to adjust a scope that far. I later tried a different set of ring's thinking the cheap ring's maybe off, it changed nothing. I plan on mounting a different scope to see if its the cheap scope, or if the picatinny scope rail machined on the rifle. Also they said in the instructions to only use crossman or benjamin pellets to avoid damage. Can anyone comment on this, I don't want to find out the hard way. I do plan on removing the Rubber but pad, and packing the cavity in the stock with some Dense foam material, like I used on my HW97 BL. I really do enjoy shooting this rifle, and even consider getting one in .22 cal, only i will forget the cheap scope.

My problem was the cheap scope, that required better than 2 inches to get windage on target. I swapped for a bug buster scope and all was fine. I'm shooting JSB pellets 10.64. and plan on getting some much heavier one's for my HW80. What a bruiser. I'm going to have to put a scope on it, since I'm having some issues picking up the globe front sight.

Yep, I have a drawer full of Crosman/Centerpoint 4x32 scopes that don't work on a springer. They are not alone though, I only know of one scope under $50 that holds up to 100% of all springers. It's a big heavy bastard and it has a weird funnel under the mil dots that some don't like. Nobody knows that the weird funnel is for, but the leading theory is that the Chinese copied a USSR scope exactly and it had that funnel on the reticle, so they copied that too.

Hi again,

This was a brand new rifle, new scope, and first shots were off 3 inches to the right. So I didn't think the scope was destroyed in the very first shot, also when I adjusted the windage, it repeated for the 20-30 next shot's, and would probably still be holding it's new zero. As mentioned I now have a bug buster on it, and I know it will hold up better. I just feel they screwed up at the factory installing the gut's that the scope would be that far off center of it's own tube, and mounting hardware. I did prove it was not the hardware just the cheaply mfg, scope.

I own a couple of the Benjamin Summits, one in .22 and one in .177. I currently have no complaints about the .22. However the recent .177 I purchased I noticed that the picatinny rail is laser-welded on the receiver slightly offset to the barrel bore when holding the rifle with zero cant. It was not drastic enough for my scope to overcome it, but it was noticeable to my eye before I mounted a scope on it.

And yes, I also have a box in my closet full of CenterPoint 4x32 scopes that came with the different Crosman/Benjamin air rifles I have purchased. I never mounted any of them. Even the 3-9x40 CP that came with the .177 has never been mounted. They just seem too light, flimsy, below-par glass, and I have seen some really bad reviews and results from people trying them out on springers. The scopes that come packaged with these air rifles just seem bottom-of-the-barrel. I am not saying that all CenterPoint scopes are bad, but the packaged/combo ones are about as cheap as it gets. I would definitely suggest trying out a better optic (which shouldn't be hard to do).

As mentioned I have mounted another scope, which took less windage it was off 1/2 inch, same distance to the left, where as the centerpoint scope was off nearly 3 inches. I don't see how laser welding the scope rail on the barrel is any cheaper than a drilled and tapped mount, or just an 11 mm rail machined in. Either way I have it working good,

....centerpoints arent that bad to me....probably better than the leapers i have had.....and those np2 guns are made in here in america.... except for the trigger , which can be remedied with a $12-15 trigger tune kit from ebay , these are pretty good guns with good american barrels......compareable to an r1 / hw80 , in my opinion as far as power and shootability ..... but the german wood stocked guns have much more invested into them , while most american guns are plastic..... but i like my jim shockey and my eva shockey that i converted with a .20 lw barrel , and also fitted a barrel for a .25 trail xl for easy swap-out.... and you'll always be able to get parts cheap !! crosman customer service is the best. - paul.

You never specified which Benjamin Summit you have. They all have the same stocks, but there are 6 different variations of the Summit. 2 of them have machined dovetails from the factory, and 4 of them have laser-welded picattiny rails on top. Laser welding in mass production can cost less than drilling and tapping (minus the rail itself).

Glad to hear things worked out for you.

I agree, Crosman does have great customer service. Also, with an investment of $1 per rifle and an hour or so of patience, the CBT trigger can be modified to be very smooth. The trigger spring replacement for it is #9700 1/4-Inch x 1/2-Inch x .035-Inch spring. There is an older thread on this forum on how to modify the trigger to smooth it out greatly between stages with a little bit of elbow grease and patience with modification.

I look at the box and all it says is benjamin summit adult air rifle, it has the laser welded scope mount, and the black plastic stock, which I filled the end compartment with dense foam, to reduce any vibration, or noise. It also says SBD Silver silencing.
