Benjamin Marauder .22 Huma Regulator Question

I just installed a Huma regulator in my .22 Marauder and I have my reg set at 135 bar. I figured that would be enough to get me 30 ft lbs. I’m in the middle of tuning and I’m falling we’ll short of my energy goals. I was just wondering if anybody has a Huma in their .22 Marauder and what energy they are shooting at.

That’s the exact velocity I am getting 😃. I’ve only shot one fill of the resivoir trying to tune though. The wife came home from work, so I’ll continue tomorrow. It’s odd how my Impact reg is set to 140 bar and it’ll push a 25 grain pellet to 950 fps (I don’t shoot em that fast). Must be the valve. I hope I can get up to 900 fps on the 18 grain JSBs because that’s the most accurate with my Marmot Militia barrel. I also hope I get at least 30 shots per fill. I was getting 30 shots at 30 ft lbs with an extreme spread of 19 fps without he reg. Oh how I love tinkering with air guns 😃

Marmot Militia barrel here too. Thanks for the tip on pellet speed for the Marmot Militia barrel. I think you are right about the valve being a limiting factor...plenum volume is probably on the low side as well. Jefferson State Airrifles has a new "balance" Marauder valve and it appears to be working very well, that might be an option to get 30 ft-lbs. I have one in my .25 Marauder with a Huma (140 bar) and I'm getting 41 ft-lbs.

Tinkering with airguns is most excellent, I completely agree. Good luck & let me know how your build turns out.

Helimech, I documented my journey to 915 fps with huma and mm barrel here: http://www.airgunnation.com/topic/quest-for-the-holy-grail-1-100yds-with-gen-2-marauder-22/
The upshot was that even with HUMA I had to change the valve, hammer spring, and transfer port size to get there (I think I had to drill out the port, which took some courage considering how much I paid for the barrel). I bought a kit from Tim Hill (noted in linked post) to do all that. More $$$ but its proven and it came with directions. Hill also answers emailed questions. I also left the gauge block in to get some more plenum. In the end I'm filling a little over 3k thanks to the regulator protecting me from valve lock, and getting about 40 shots at 905 ish with 18.1s and pretty good accuracy. Sometimes I can even group pretty good at 100yds I also found I have a little pop in velocity for a few shots after coming off the regulator, suggesting I have it set too high. I haven't gotten around to pulling the reg to turn it down. As you'll read in my thread, I'm no expert.

Lol I'm setting one up right now with the Huma reg with gauge port and the MMHF barrel. However I have an aftermarket valve which does make a difference so I'll need to see how it does. I think I hafta agree that my WARP with MMHF barrel also loves high speeds. At 925 with 18grs I shot a dime size 10 shot group at 55yds in a variable wind minus one shot which was just barely out of it.

I have the regulator that replaces the gauge block. It is what it is for plenum size. Thanks for the info FlexWagtail. I’ll look into a new valve, but I think I’ll stick with the lower power for now. If I need higher, I’ll grab my .25 Impact. I just ran 20 shots with the Air Arms Diabolo Field 16 grains and I got an average of 846 fps with an ES of 6 fps. I know my Marauder shoots 1/2” 50 yard groups with them at 910 fps. Hopefully they’ll still do that. I just want to get my old girl dancing again before I start buying more dresses for her 😃

Per fill I'm getting 62 shots at an average muzzle velocity of 825 fps with an extreme spread of 30 fps on unsorted 18.1g JSB pellets. Here is the plot of the string:
d37fc794bbac5efecf0ab9f274661c10.jpg

Maybe 70 shots if a little higher ES is ok.

Ouch. Looks like I need to figure something out. I just ran my first full string and I got 25 shots before it fell off the reg. I have the stock valve, hammer, and hammer spring installed and I have the hammer spring tension backed off all of the way. I’m getting an average of 826 fps with an E.S. of 15 over those 25 shots. I figured I should get more shots per fill. It does sound like I’m getting severe hammer bounce, so I’ll have to figure that out. Oh the joys of tuning 😃

My Mrod is all stock but I installed the Huma Reg with valve block. I tried backing out all the springs too and had sever hammer bounce plus a low shot count. Start turning the hammer spring in about 5 or 6 turns until the FPS comes up and the gun will get much quieter too. I turned in the hammer throw too but I think I need to back it out some? I'm just learning myself and so glad I bought a YH compressor so degassing and refilling only takes 1 1/5 minutes. I think the Reg came at 145 bar? and I'm going to turn it down to 130bar next because my shot count is around 30 before dropping off the Reg.

Have you opened up any ports? Up to a .160 for a .22 is best for regulated guns and really an LW helps get efficiency up. I hope to have my .22 tuned by tonight if all works out. I just finished a friends .25 Mrod last night and without an HDD with just the light hammer I'm getting 28 shots on a 3000psi fill at 42fpe nothing spectacular but he wanted it easy to cock and without an SSG or TSS it's pretty good numbers. Takes alittle while the first time tuning a regulated gun to understand what makes them tick lol

So I had time to tune mine yesterday. This was a rough tune as I only have time at night to do it right now. Also pellets used were a beat up tin of JSB 18.13gr that have alot of bent skirt pellets. Mods include older WAR valve I got in a trade, huma gauge port reg, 26 gram MDS hammer and MMHF barrel. With an SSG I'd expect even better numbers.

Dairyboy: I know you will make the spread much lower when you fine tune. I guess I need a few more parts to get my 30 shot count. I have the Huma reg with gauge port plus an Hill .161 TP and the rest is stock. Here's mine so far.............

Edit: My reg is set at 135bar I'm thinking I need to lower it too130bar and add a little more hammer spring tesion?

Oh how today was a huge failure and success. To start, my chrony broke. I didn’t even shoot it this time. I was able to piece together a working chrony from the one I did shoot. So I had the bright idea of cutting a coil or two off of the hammer spring to make it a free floating hammer like an FX rifle. Yeah, that didn’t work. I was still getting hammer bounce really bad. I then decided to tighten the hammer tension and extend the throw all of the way. Wow. My Marauder has never been quieter. No hammer bounce and I can fart louder than this gun. I ran it over the chrony and I’m not getting as much power as I was before, but it’ll do to get me shooting. I went from around 846 fps to 795 with Air Arms 16 grain pellets. That’s still about 22 ft lbs, so it’ll still squirrel. I then ran a 30 shot string and got a 10 fps spread and only used 400 psi of air. Using Kentucky math, I should get around 60-70 shots per fill. I’m very happy right now. I will be ordering a new hammer spring and transfer port to bore out so I can get the power back up, but I’m very happy now.

Only 400PSI? I wish mine was so efficient. Mine uses 1200+ PSI. I'm shooting 18.13gn JSBs and my hammer is 6+ turns in. The hammer throw is only 1 or 2 turns in. The velocity screw is 4.5 turns out. Any tips for me? BTW it's very loud so I know it's no way near tuned. Thanks

I would just play around with your tensions and lengths of the hammer. I’d leave the transfer port screw out as far as you have it, but try increasing tension and length. I got extremely lucky with mine. It was nothing but a Hail Mary that ended up working out. When my new hammer spring and transfer port arrive, I’ll be able to give you some better advise because it won’t be a guess when I tune for more power.

So the trick is when tuning a regulated gun you want to find your maximum FPS at that pressure. I usually start at 6 turns CW on the hammer spring and while throwing it over the chrony and record where there at and back out one turn and shoot a shot or 2 and keep doing that until you get to about 20-30fps below your maximum FPS you had. You'll hear it get alot quieter.
