Bench Rest Barrel Cleaning

Well I looked @ LW website they say there AG barrels are a special steel? There steel powder burner barrels are either chromoly or there proprietary Stainless which I assume is harder than 416 stainless, I will say this on cleaning when u clean from the chamber end of a centerfire you use a bore guide, when u use a brush you always remove the brush before you pull it back thru the bore as not to damage that precious crown! On my rifle I can't get a rod through the breech end so I would have to go from the muzzle end, and that ain't happening on my AG,patch or brush!!

"jps2486"What you are cleaning out is oil residue most of the time. I've only heard of very few cases of actual lead deposits and lead flakes being taken out of barrels. I've had one that produced lead flakes, but that disappeared after the barrel was broken in.

This makes sense, but it leads to another question. The Marmot Militia marauder barrel is a TJ and they want you to lube all your pellets in that barrel. If what you are saying is true, and lead build-up is not an issue, then why the request to lube the pellets just to clean out the lube later? I've seen it stated multiple places that lubing pellets increases intervals between cleanings which contradicts the original statement.

The Marmot Militia barrel has a very tight choke and does lead up quickly due to that. TJ barrels are hammer forged and not choked. Jim at Marmot Militia puts the choke on the barrels he sells.

I use a modified bore snake . I remove the brass brushes ( usually they have 2 ) and cut down the brass weight so it will fit in most guns . Make sure and sand the brass weight down smooth so there is no chance it can rip an oring .
The one thing I will say is when using a bore snake and oil or bore cleaner ...Put a few drops directly down the bore and Not on the snake itself ...It will squeeze out excess liquid as it goes in breech and will run EVERYWHERE !! I had to completely tear down my rifle last night to get all the bore cleaner out of the piston and piston sleeve ..It made a huge mess.
