being too defensive / sensitive...and negative accuracies

i bring this up as i have had it done to me and i have seen others receive the "negative accuracy". now , as i was led to believe , these designations were for people that gave incorrect information about a subject. bad or dangerous advice about shooting techniques , or procedures on how to service an airgun. another would be the less obvious case of hostility discussing a post. this is more subtle. i perceive an issue regarding text posts "conveying" a perception of negativity when it is not intended. think about it , a text / post can't give you the inflection of the speakers voice. we all know the same word can have two meanings with a different voice intensity. i feel too many negative accuracies are given because people feel slighted by an otherwise innocent post. i frequently engage in "foot in the mouth disease" LOL! but sometimes people are just too damn sensitive / defensive. this usually results from product comparisions or techniques involving gun tuning ETC. you express a positive comparision to another product or technique and a responder defends there support otherwise and feels you are downgrading their stuff or ridiculing their procedures.

i put out posts to gather feedback on people's opinions on comparisions and expect to get feedback both for and against it. some responses at first appear hostile , but , after reading them more carefully. they come across as less so. i just wish others would take the time to do the same with my responses before taking offense to them. i had a couple close calls in past 2 weeks and after PM these posters , found out these were nice folks and they found i was not such an apparent jerkwad. i feel i have been able share conversation with several people that otherwise would have been lost. the price being only a few negative accuracies NOT being given out.

thank you

. i just post my actual hands on experience - another fella might have a completely different encounter with what ever product ( for ex : .177 bsa's dont work for me - hold sensitivity. but .22' bsa's are great !) . when i first became an airgun member of online forums, i parroted stats and specs that were not actual hands-on experience with the gun posted about. it was the specs from the manufacturer or company that sells that airgun. we know most airguns dont perform to those specs , but a lot of us try and find out on our own, anyway. i wasted LOTS of time, money, and energy buying what i wanted most times because the high dollar springer snobs would down most anything that wasnt good german or english quality. i DID find some unexpensive airguns that really shoot well after some tinkering, but they'll never sell for they're worth - even if you have a old gamo that shoots better than the r9. or a hatsan. spainish cometa for sure shoots very well for me. .........but the sensitivity.......i wish i could say that i liked being the bad guy - but that's wronger than two boys kissin ! i was told not to try and mend my past on the websites i had attempted to find those to make repairs of my with. it causes too much controversy and brings negativity - and basically makes our hobby a less positive experience , and i'm sure not trying to do anymore of that. .........i wish i could say i liked being the bad guy , but that's wronger than two boys kissin.

You know, I was just looking over peoples feedback and noticing that there are some hostile people that leave negative feedback for no good reason at all. I try and be upbeat, positive and give good accurate, advise. I have been lucky with my feedback other than a minus for click-baiting when I first came to this site. Don't even know what click-baiting is, all capital letters in my title??? Big deal! I also recently got a negative by error...positive statement with a - by mistake. I really don't even pay much attention to it because after all, it is the internet and even though we have a great group of people, there are "trolls" everywhere. I.E. Bob's 5FPE post yesterday!

I have to say though, some of the negative feedbacks I just looked at were not justified, many look to be from the same person as Motorhead pointed out and if it were me, it would hurt my feelings or make me upset. I guess I'm glad I don't pay much attention to it because it doesn't seem very fair. Rangur, Bri, Motorhead, Bubbler and Rane, I appreciate you guys and really enjoy interacting with all of you...everyone else too. I'm not kissing ass either, I really enjoy this site, I visit it and a couple fly fishing sites every day. I've learned so much from this site, hopefully helped some people too, made some great friends and basically, I just really enjoy the people!

I agree this is a flawed system, hopefully everyone will just try to be cool and take a second to think about what they're reading and it's context before they leave a negative feedback. Nobody likes negatives, so why do it unless it is really offensive, dangerous or just really bad advice? Leaving negative feedback because someone else prefers MOA and you recommended MIL is not a very cool think to do. Like I said in my first post, it feels better to leave positives anyway! If you enjoy leaving negative feedback, you might want to go see a therapist! That was a joke if you couldn't determine the context!

Not really, get help!

Sometimes negative feedback is necessary, but the vast majority of the time it seems like all it does is dissuade people from sharing their opinions.

Case in point: a very good friend that has been into airguns for DECADES. He and has won some pretty big shooting competitions, owns and has worked on just about everything out there, and machines his own barrels and parts. Really, he is probably the person with the most airgun knowledge that I personally know. Anyway, he made a non-controversial comment on a post and got negative feedback saying something like, " there you go again, not knowing what you're talking about."

The problem with doing that to people is that those few members who REALLY know what they're talking about will clam up and quit commenting. We all lose when we don't get to be taught by people with extensive experience and knowledge.

Great post, on right on point, and very timely. I actually don't mind the system, as sometimes people do need to be reminded that they are jerks, or given a prop for great help and being a swell person. However, there are these ultra sensitive, mightier than though, and pretty stupid people out there tagging others with negatives because, well, hell, because who knows really why.

Case in point, some low IQ jerk Oph the other day actually gave me a negative because I told Windmill to place his mother in law behind the target to ensure the pellet did not hit something else. Needless to say, most folk laughed at the JOKE. But not this unknown individual, no, he gave me a negative siting my "suggestion to shoot in the direction of other people"

At any rate, and at the end of the day, it really matters nothing to me. Not sleeping any less well at night because of it. Nor will I loose my job, etc. But Damn, must people really be that Stupid?!

You're right Frank. I'm sure there are times when we've all refrained from saying something funny, sharing and experience or giving advice, for that very reason. It's really too bad.

I will never refrain from saying my thoughts, funny or otherwise. What that implies at it's core is that you/me are willing to be controlled by fear (of what really?) The worse of it is actually happening out there in the real world, where people feel like they can't say anything because a snowflake will get triggered and melt. I'm done with that nonsense, I escaped a totalitarian regime to come to a free nation, for what? to be afraid of a snowflake? Nah! I will pass, bring on the little red bubbles.

All I can say is..who cares about negative feedbak? Jajaja I have a few negativity without reason (imo) but to tell you the truth, I really don't care...

Something I have learn in life is no matter what you do, always some one will find is wrong.

If you do what is right and not what is easy, karma, life, god or whatever you believe in, will pay you back, that is a fact 😉

I might have to give you a negative because you're disagreeing with me.

Kidding, but that's what happens a lot of the time.

Someone with a different opinion than our own isn't automatically wrong. It seems that social media has created the current mindset of hair trigger, zero to 90, congenial conversation to frothing at the mouth that we see all too often. Having a polite discussion with someone who thinks differently than I do is the best way for me to learn something and gain different perspectives.

Edosan---

You're a know it all though!

And I mean that in the absolute best sense possible! You just keep sharing all the advise you can. I've learned more about the Impact MKII from you than I have from FX or anybody else(except maybe Ernest). I greatly appreciate everything you say if it has to do with the Impact! As far as I'm concerned, you should get a positive feedback every time you post something! Well maybe I took that a little bit too far. Maybe I should start the Edosan Fanboy Club! Just joking buddy. I really do appreciate all you've shared and all the times we've messaged back and forth about the MKII. It has helped me a lot. Have a good one!

I can't remember who it was but a while back there was a post that I didn't really agree with or was confused about. I wrote up my questions and why I disagreed, he responded and we went back and forth with this great dialogue for quite a while. We never really did agree with each other but it was nice to have a civil discussion that we both learned from. A few days later I noticed he had left me a positive feedback for listening, learning, sharing and being able to disagree without getting all pissed off. It was cool to see there are some "grown up's" willing to disagree with each other and discuss it without name calling and red balls! I'll see if I can find who it was and share.

It was SMH77 post #407237.

I wish AGN would have blog section where anything goes with minimal restrictions I can see how you don’t allow certain things like vile profanity directed at some one or anything racist. I was raised to not be forgiving or friendly to people who hate any try to limit American Values (bill of rights and Constitution) unfortunately with political correctness some folks in charge become chicken in defending your rights.
