Beeman P17 thoughts?

Ive been reading reviews and listening to many people talk about the accuracy and plink ability of this little air pistol.

I see Amazon has them with a red dot scope for around $38. I was entertaining getting one to play around with.

Anyone shoot these and know what I can expect as far as accuracy at what distances and whats you favorite pellet to shoot in the p17?

Thank you

I have three of them, I call them my snake guns,

In the summer I do not walk out into my yard with out one on my hip.

I killed eight rattlers last year, All in All I have killed hundreds of the rattlers with my P17

I used to go out hunting the rattlers , But its been years since I have done that.

OH yea, One shot to the head, The skin is perfect,

Mike

Think I will stick to hunting bears. LOL

Yes they are without a doubt the best bang for the buck, but funny you never hear the bad reviews. This is the barrel on mine, bought used. As you can see its drilled off-center. If you have the availability to inspect it before you buy it, you should look for this quality control fail. Just gave me an excuse to machine a Crosman 2240 barrel to fit, and now its a .22. I did the foil tape trick to the piston, and added an upgraded breech oring, and she's shooting 22 cal Hobby's at a very consistent 350 fps. Also very accurate.

I'd love to see some groups that the pistol shot with that barrel? Was it "bad"?

One of the best things about the P17 is that it shoot cheap old pellets really well. The RWS domes are very good for a premium pellet, but I can shoot any Crosman dome or wads and it does well. The best fit in my barrel are the Gamo Hunter domes that are horrible in anything else. White label Winchesters also shoot fine. I prefer a dome over wads because they load better with my arthritic fingers. I was shooting FTT greens yesterday on the 50 foot range using my 2x red dot sight. I hit the 1 1/2 " gong 40 shots in a row. The FTT is not the best pellet for the P17 though. the open sights are good, but I can only see a bullseye out to 30' or so.

Bandg: Didn't save any groups... but yes it shot horribly with the drilled-offset barrel in the pic. As I recall it grouped well outside the sight's capability to zero it. (Does that make sense?) Its a tack driver now with the Crosman 2240 barrel & Hobby's. I think the barrel new, was like $17 shipped off Ebay... Much easier to load with my fat fingers...While the 2240 barrel was in the lathe, I re crowned, resurfaced and re-chamfered the breech face. Then polished both muzzle & breech to like chrome. Stick 2 or 3 layers of tin duct tape on top of the piston, then carefully trim off, and you'll get some good velocity gains. Must be the metal tape used on hot ducts, etc...NOT regular duct tape. 5 Minute fix, and you get easy 400+ fps with 7 grainers and 350-360 fps w/22 cal Hobby's.

I've had at least 5 of them with a couple given to friends. Triggers have been improved on the 3 I still have and I think there is still one in original packing in a box somewhere. I haven't needed to look at a barrel since all have shot very well. But I bet all of us have experienced a less than ideal situation as you did there. My question was really did it shoot poor (large) groups? But as you note shooting outside of sight range of adjustment would probably make that question moot since you might never get to the point of even checking that. Nice work in getting it where you wanted it. Hope you enjoy it.

Mine is badged “Marksman 2004” and had a crummy barrel. Didn’t group as well as most seem to.

Like a previous poster I cobbled a slightly longer .22 barrel and now it shoots great. Easier loading too, chamfering the breech helped. Gained a few fps by shimming the barrel perfectly centered on the exhaust-port. Make sure the breech sits firmly against the TP Oring, or you’re losing some pressure there too.

The dowel pin just forward of the hammer kept walking-out, there are two transverse holes inside the frame that will fit a pair of 2-56 set screws which stopped the drift. Also, my elevation screw would slowly unscrew itself during use, raising the POI without notice. A drop of loctite stopped that.

Mine clocks 340 w/.22 Hobbies and really rattles a beer can.
