Beautiful Owl

Really enjoy seeing the owl photos .

Several years ago on Easter Sunday while walking my dog I found a baby Great Horned Owlet that had fallen out of its nest .

Knowing that fox , coyote and fisher cats patrol my property at night , I hastily built a nest box in a tree near where I found the owlet .

I hand fed it raw steak for several days until I found a rabbits hind leg that the parents brought for it .

I placed a game camera near the box to watch its progress .

Had what I believe was a barred owl nearly take the coyote call out of my mouth one cold January morning just before sun up. It came out of nowhere in complete silence. Luckily it realized that I wasn’t the injured rabbit it was hoping for and hit the flaps a few feet from my face. Scared us both pretty bad. It crapped on my AR and I headed back to the truck.

The pair in my picture have been hanging around for about 5 years. The easiest way to spot them is by watching and listening to the crows. They can be relentless in the their torment of owls. One day I heard the typical cacophony of crows harassing an owl and I went to discover the owl up in a tree ripping a crow to pieces for breakfast while it's buddies tried in vain to intimidate her.

Yes Papy, They have a Love Hate relationship. The crows hate them and they love to eat crow whenever they catch one or raid their nest for the young. They are also one of the few predators that will eat a skunk. When It was tearing the crows breast off the crow was still alive and screaming. They're not too concerned with killing them quickly.

I've seen Merlins do the same to Collared Doves.

Owls are the ultimate stealth predator.

I was bowhunting one evening at dusk, watching 2 does work their way around my stand. I wasn't interested in shooting them, was actually hoping a buck would follow them in, so I was standing and being very still. Out of my peripheral vision on the left I see something coming at me in a hurry, and turned my head at the last moment to see what it was. It was a very large owl making a run on me, wings widespread and talons out. When he saw my head move he realized I was a lot bigger than he thought and veered off to his right at the last moment. Scared the shiz out of me to say the least! As large as he was, if he'd hit me in the chest or higher, he could have very easily knocked me out of the stand and I'd have been hanging there in my harness trying to get back in the stand with no one anywhere around to help.

Wow, what a great story thanks!

This snowy owl was on the house across the street from me one whole day, a couple of years ago
