We feed the birds black oil sunflower seeds and they love em. So do the squirrels, deer, raccoons etc etc etc. I suggest a squirrel proof feeder hung high enough to keep the deer out of it. Then the furry critters must confine themselves to the ground under the feeder as the birds will drop a lot of seeds. Where you can safely shoot them. We also hang our feeders from wires thin enough to keep the coons from climbing down them.

Wild Birds Unlimited makes a good squirrel proof feeder. We have six of them and they hold up to abuse quite well. They are also guaranteed and before I learned to hang them high enough deer got to a couple of them and damaged them. WBU replaced the damaged parts without question. They ARE expensive. Running about a hundred bucks but if you have lots of birds they will pay for themselves quickly as they keep out both squirrels and heavy birds like doves and pigeons.
