Average body width of Eurasian Collared Doves?

Does anyone know what's the average body width of Eurasian Collared Doves in inches? Sometimes they're hard to pick up with my range finder especially when they're sitting on a cable line and I can't pick up a hard object near it. I'm just curious and trying to range them with my .2mil reticle on my scope to get the distance. I would assume maybe 3 to 4 inches on the widest portion of their body. Does that sound correct? Maybe this should go in the Optics section of the forum or did I come to the right place?

Peskadot,

at what ranges are you trying to range them? I have ranged pigeons at 70y on wires, and my rangefinder, an older and cheaper model, always seem to pick them up. 😊 I'm surprised how well it works.

It's a Bushnell Scout DX 100 ARC. At this point I can't seem to see the need to buy a new $400 model, this thing does it all, incl. angle measurement.

How you doing Matthias? Sorry, i just came across this thread which i posted last year lol. Usually, it's when I'm trying to range them at 50 yards and over. Unless I'm resting the range finder on something, I can usually range them. Sometimes, I don't have that luxury depending on the angle I have to shoot, i don't have anything nearby to support the rangefinder. I'm using an older Leupold RX-600 which is about maybe 10 years old. It will be retired and serve as backup duty. I ordered a Leica 2800.COM about a week ago and it should be arriving anytime soon. I heard a lot of good reviews about Leica rangefinders in regards to great glass and being able to range small objects from far.

They seem easier to distinguish from Mourning doves during the spring and summer months. I’m having no problem ranging them with the Leica out to 170+. Not sure how it would help but here’s a picture of one next to a Starling.

Nathan,

Have you ranged starlings over 50 yards on cable/power lines unsupported with your Leica? Considering starlings are a lot smaller than doves, it would be pretty impressive if the Leica could pick them up. Can't wait to get mine.
