Tuning Avenger .22 barrel options/conversion kit?

What have you tried for pellets. Mine loved the air arms field heavys in 18 gr I'm going a shipment in tomorrow and will let you know what else it likes if any of the others are good. The gun is tuned a bit hot from the factory. Try a pellet in the 18 to 22 gr range.

O I forgot to mention. Call green mountain as they usualy are willing to make or already have something that may work.

I'm at 30FPE with 18.1 JSB's (approx 870/880 FPS). Between 1" and 2" groups at 50 and 70 yards. It varies. Sometimes I get 5 holes touching, sometimes it's 2". Seems to vary the same whether I'm shooting at 50 or 70 yards.

I'm sure some/most of my issue is me, and my lack of shooting technique.

But pushing a pellet through the barrel, the leade is awful, abrupt, and extremely tight. Then slight drag until about 2" from the muzzle, it tightens up, then it's loose for the last 1.5". The head has marks from the lands and grooves, when visually inspected with an eye loupe. It is not riding just the lands. The entire periphery of the pellet head shows damage from the lands and grooves. The grooves seem very shallow (when compared to my HW97 springer's barrel).

I've touched up/deburred the transfer port, and the leade (a little bit), and I tried polishing the bore with J-B bore paste. I'll probably try to do some more. But the Bore Bright is out of stock (for months now), and I don't have any, so I can't really finish the job (as I haven't found a substitute product, yet).

Thanks for the tip about Green Mountain. I'll call them, as they do not list anything for air rifles on their web site (that I could find anyway).

Just curious....is anyone modifying barrel blanks to fit the Avenger? Or making some sort of drop in replacement barrel kit that can be installed by the end user?

I ask because I did not win the barrel lottery. And I'm not sure the gun is worth the investment in sending it out to a professional tuner for a custom fabricated and fitted solution.

There was a poster here who had custom work done to his Seneca Aspen (same barrel as the Avenger, Liberty, Origin, etc) where the tuner apparently machined an adapter that allowed him to use FX barrel liners.

Hey guys, I just got my aspen on Wednesday after many months of planning and work by Nitin over at http://www.precisionpneumaticproducts.com/. He did opened up the transfer port, machined a custom barrel sleeve, and machined a fitting so that all .25 FX liners can be used. I have pics!

Expansion with 25grn XL HP hollow base slug (875fps) and 30 poly core dish base(810 FPS) into a five gallon bucket full of water. I don’t have a picture of the 30 grain poly core slug groups, but 7 out of eight were in a quarter sized hole, with one flyer, similar to the group the 25.4 Kings shot in the picture above. Chronograph results: 25.4 JSB kings at 890-850 for 10 shots, 25grn griffin slugs shown above were going around 870-840 for 9-10 shots, 20grn H&N FTT were going too fast around 925 FPS, and were going all over the place. Lastly, 30grn were around 810-790fps , the most consistent I had, for 8 shots and then drop of hard to around 500fps.

I too have a barrel I'm not particularly happy with on my Liberty. I'll probably reach out to this particular guy to see how would charge for a barrel adapter.

do a crown job on both ends of the barrel, polish the breech end and do a thorough cleaning of the barrel, also make sure the magazine is not causing the problem, do single shot tray, and see if it is ok, try other brand pellets,

you tube video barrel recrown DIY, it works the same on air guns.

for .22 I would use a #8 Brass screw, for .25 a #10 Brass screw, Use "Flat head slotted" Brass Screws

I've done this to a few of my guns and it works......

FYI, the brass screw and abrasive goo is not recrowning a barrel. It’s lapping the crown. If your crown isn’t cut properly, you can lap until the cows come home and just wind up with a pretty chamfer that still isn’t square with the bore. It’s real easy to get your lopsided drill off axis so I would suggest the hillbilly method as a last resort before you head to a machinist.
