    Executive Summary:
    The SSS is now working.

I’ve been concerned about the ballistics calculations of the SSS at extended ranges and just wasn’t getting that confidence from the results that I felt like I needed to see.  The SSS is a very basic ballistics calculator with no option to compute Coriolis, Spin Drift or other gyroscopic effects.  I just wasn’t “feeling the love”.  I am happy to report that it should be good to go out to about 100 meters now.  Beyond that you are going to start running into the gyroscopic effects which it is not calculating unless you do the additional math yourself. The basic ballistics calculations are there and running right.  Hopefully ATN will get those gyroscopic calculations embedded in the next release.  They have done a great job fixing a bunch of the broken stuff with this release.  Anyway …

Diana Model 48 .22 air rifle, CPHP, sorted.

The past couple of weeks I’ve been “blueprinting” for lack of a better term, every aspect of my shooting platform and ammo.  I’ve double checked my BC by measuring the drop and got it measured to 4 decimal places (0.0293).  I double checked my scope height and found that it was off by about 0.25″ (3.38″).  I double checked my muzzle velocity and made a tiny adjustment to that (782fps).  Then I went through the setup again with the new firmware to make sure that everything was exactly as it was supposed to be.

The wind was blowing out of the SW at about 10 MPH when I was doing my zero but since I had done a rough zero yesterday, I turned on the SSS and input the wind data and 27 yards (dang it…).  I shot a group and it was centered on the aimpoint and a bit high I saved the correction data the SSS was giving me and turned it off.  Then I marked up the target so that I could know where the shots would have gone if I had had the SSS turned off and went through the zero process.

Note: The devs apparently fixed the “zero range lock up” bug by setting an arbitrary limit of 25 meters on the input range to the SSS.  The developers still have not figured out that the AG market world wide is larger than the PB market… :(  but I’m thinking ATN will hear the AG community and fix that in the next release of the firmware.

Then I set a target out at 45 yards towards the SE and checked the wind.  It had switched to the south and was now blowing at about 15 mph.  I input that.   The SSS was reporting a correction of U 1.71 MOA  R 2.35 MOA  (0.8″, 1.1″).  I shot the following with no hold off, 4 touching a dime and dropped one, knew it when I did it:

Haven’t upgraded my ATN sight yet but I was hoping they would add a mil dot reticle or something similar for us air gunners to shoot at various ranges.

That would be nice.  Reticle number 5 is the closest equivalent.  The reference magnification for that reticle is 10x.  At 10x it is 4 mils wide and 3 mils tall exactly.
Here is a link to that data.  There is a pdf in that folder which maps all possible magnifications (for a 3x-14x) to the size of that reticle in MOA.  But the most important thing is this image:

The pdf is in this directory: https://www.oldspooks.com/agstuff/ATN/Reticles/R5/

    Other reticles are here: https://www.oldspooks.com/agstuff/ATN/Reticles/

I did up grade my scope yesterday to the new firmware and no new reticle.  I find reticle #5 to be too small between the lines for my liking but have used #7 occasionally but not enough lines !  Maybe if we all started suggesting this to ATN they would take notice.  I think they are fixated on flat shooting firearms but I bet a sizeable number of us air gunners are using their sight.  Other than the reticle I really like mine.  Check elsewhere on this topic (optics) for a problem I had with the illuminator and then found the reason for it !

I saw that.  Good information.

Please let me know if anyone starts using the bluetooth range finder with this scope. Interested to see how good it will work adjusting the reticle for different distances…

    thanks,
