Athlon scopes

I've got to jump in here, I see comments about what "others" are using in videos or at matches, or talk of YouTubers switching brands, I don't think anyone has pointed out that a lot of these shooters are sponsored and don't pay for those expensive scopes (not all, I know) but it's a job to some of the shooters to show off those scopes and get "us" to buy them... I had the opportunity to shoot with some really high end scopes and all were nice, even though I had a choice of scopes, one of the biggest deciders for me was eye relief and reticle choice after clarity and brightness... I buy what works for me, my eyes and my rifles... Brands don't seem to matter so much, there's a scope at all price points to get the job done... Most scopes are made in China anyways... Probably at the same factory...

Personally I wasn't impressed with the Athlon scopes I've tried so far... Just my opinion of course...

Good points Ken. So, just being nosy here, what scopes do you really like?

Well, I have an Athlon Midas TAC with the with the new APLR 4 FFP MOA reticle. Here is the like for the review I did on it:

This is a very good quality scope and although some may say its a cheap to mid priced scope, it the best that I can afford. I feel that I can justify the way I spent my $$ as it would be way out of my league to afford a "Higher End" Scope. This Midas TAC is as high as I can reach and I have no regrets. I believe many others have already discovered that this is a damn good scope in comparison to some of the Upscale ones. I have been winding the Turrets on this for awhile now and its been holding up quite well. Good luck.

I'm somewhat of an industry insider with Athlon Optics so I am a bit biased. That being said I certainly can be and am honest about the whole of all their line up of rifle scopes.

Let's just lay this on the table, the less expensive Athlon FFP lines are made in one Chinese factory whereas the higher end Chinese scopes are made in another factory. The latter factory bought brand new very expensive multi axis CNC machines in 2017 and is putting out excellent quality stuff. That's all I will say on this.

The less expensive scopes are what they are, meaning that they are packed with nice features at an attractive price point. The quality is so-so, meaning not great but not bad either. There is more variance from unit to unit than the more costly scopes. I look at it this way, I'm happy to have all or most of the features these scopes offer at this price point, in fact many of them being combined together was my advice to Athlon to begin with. There are always compromises right?! As much as we'd like to have our cake and eat it too we can only have so much quality and features for x amount of money. For the most part myself and those I know that own these have had good luck with the Talos and Argos. I did win state 3 years ago and freestyle division the last two years with a Argos BTR 6-24 on top of my USFT so.... Done some cold bore hits out to 1122Y with both those scopes on my centerfires too. I'd also like to mention that many scopes from many manufacturers have variance at this price point as well. Even though it's a pain I suggest taking advantage of the Athlon GOLD warranty by sending your scope back if there is something wrong with it, sometimes they'll send you a new scope but otherwise they'll repair it. I haven't sent any of my Athlon scopes back yet, hadn't needed to. I do have a few friends that have sent there's back, some kept them and some sold their's.

I did have to send my S&B 3-20x50/$3600 back for repair twice, and two Bushnell's off for repair. Even had a NF erector get stuck, I dialed the full travel up and down a half dozen times and it worked again afterwards. I read on another forum that Tangent Theta/$4500 had some problems. Actually I've read of every brand fail here and there. Getting my point?? Not saying that in general more expensive scopes aren't higher quality and aren't more reliable, sure they are.

Except for the reticle, because I prefer all .2 mil reticles, I like the Midas TAC of any scope I've messed with at it's price point or close to it! That includes PST G2, Nikon X1000, Ares BTR, SWFA 3-15, and a host of other scopes that fall short for my purposes, with high emphasis on versatility.

Years ago I bought my S&B's because they focused to 10M, were FFP, had Horus /.2 mil reticle, next came March at 10Y, and now we can have similar features in inexpensive scopes. How awesome is that!!!! I remember back then all those cheap scopes with moa turrets and mil reticles in SFP with poor glass. Glad times have changed!
