Athlon Optics. Finaly we have more scope options. Including close focus and FFP.

Received my Athlon Optics Argos BTR 8-34x56 Side Focus Riflescope,30mm,Black,APMR IR-MIL Reticle 214066. Will test it on the range, but looking through it from the window at home it seems to be clear albeit not crispy top-line clear...which I did not expect at this price range. Nice reticle. Bit mushy turrets, but that's not a major thing for me. I am curious how it does on the indoor range at 100 yards because that's when the boys are separated from men. I hope to test for ranging accuracy and how wide of a band it operates, and clear sight picture at max power from side to side. Hope to do some tracking tests with the box method. I do not have much experience with high-end scopes except a S&B FT once, but hope to be able to hit the main points. I wanted a high-power FFP and that's worth itself the try...

"Kitplanenut"Did you get a battery with yours? If so what is the # on it. I have started shooting mine and the reticle is absolutely GREAT. Seems like a good scope. I think they are a good bargain for the dollars. Looking forward to others thoughts.
Yes, it came with a Sony CR2032 battery. There are some dead spots between clicks on the reticle lighting turret, but I do not use it anyway.

I hope to take it out to the indoor range and see how it holds up in low light. Also very curious if the sight picture is blurred around the edges. If its clear around the edges and bright enough to see a .22 pellet clearly hit at 100 yards then I think it's worth at least $600 or more.

Well, I finally had a chance to take out the Athlon Optics Argos BTR 8-34×56 Side Focus Riflescope,30mm,Black,APMR IR-MIL Reticle 214066 on the range Sunday. Did not have a lot of time, and did not do a box test, but had to make many minor adjustments between .25 JSB 25gr and 34gr pellet POIs.

First the negative: the light switch turret is not very precise, at times it hangs between settings. But, I do not use it anyway. The elevation and windage turrets are not very audible clicking, but seem to track precisely. Inside the indoor range with artificial light at 20x mag it started to darken the sight picture to around 90%. At 30x mag this darkening was more noticeable and at 34x mag (max) it was at around 75%. (however, clear and uniform sight picture throughout all the field of vision of the lense, no noticeable blurring)

The good: the FFP reticle is perfect for my use. Very sharp, at 100 yards I can see it very clearly superimposed over the sight picture. I wish at 34x mag the entire tree of 10 mil dot range on the lower side could be seen, but it only visible to around -7 mil dots down. So in some cases may need to think about the zero range setup if you are past 150 yards (I never made it that far yet). I used 50 yards for zero and that still gave me -4 mil dots at 100 yards at full 34x mag. Magnification dial is smooth and solidly executed. Parallax focus knob works good, precise enough to detect variations in focus at 100 yards between uneven target surfaces. I think it can easily be used for precise ranging purposes. The range markings were right on, from 50 yards I just dialed in to 100yards on the side focus and when to target moved up (indoor range) at was in focus and only very tiny adjustments were needed.

The sight picture is very sharp, and small letters even at 100 yards are quite readable. At the 50 yard indoor range the light was not as good as at the 100 yards and at 50yards the focus darkened the sight picture, but at 100 yards it was very good again (due to the artificial lighting being better). Not 100% but I would say at least 80% with that light level. I think outdoors in normal light it would not be a visible darkening at all.

Please, note that I am not an expert and I know even less about scopes. For comparison, I had once a S&B but never mounted it thus never took it to the range where I shot with the Athlon. I also have a couple of Japan Custom Shop Tasco 12-60x that are real nice, but the Athlon outdoes them. Probably cannot compete with $1,600+ scopes, but the $350 I paid is easily worth $700 or more.

Received my first Athlon BTR 6-24x50 APMR mil scope and during inspection before mounting it found a bit of debris on the reticle in a bad spot. Visible around the 3mil holdover at 6x but not visibile above 18x. Called Sportsgear Optics, discussed and we all agreed it would be best to send it back. If it dislodged who knows when and where it could find its way back in view. Slight brain fart on my part looking for the forms to fill out on the Sportsgear web page, but discovered it on the Athlon page. They emailed the return authorization, I shipped out that scope and the replacement was on the way. Excellent customer service. Everyone I spoke with was helpful and if they didn't have the answer, they found who had the answer. I will be doing business with them again.

Everything looked clear on the replacement, and onto the Marauder .25 it went. At 24x I could read the fine print on the target paper at 10meters in my basement range with the side focus wheel at 10 and a slight turn of the fine adjustment under the rear flip up cap. Punched the 930fps and measurements into chairgun for JSB Kings and walked it to point of impact for that range. I chose this particular reticle for all the hold over and windage dots and it being first focal plane. I have yet to get it out on a range to dial it in better for longer range since every day I've been free we have had scattered thunderstorms, trees falling, etc. However, I was headed out the door for a meeting and a ground hog happened to be in a prime low risk part of the yard. I grabbed the Mrod, dialed it to 50 yards where I estimated him to be. Looked at my range chart, found him at 6x, dialed up to what looked good. Didn't bother to look at the magnification since it no longer matters with the FFP reticle, click, ship, set down the Mrod, and went out to burry groundhog.

I now will never own anything but a FFP scope. Thank you Athlon for a price point scope that works perfect for my needs. Yup, I'm happy with it.

Quick question for anyone with both the 6-24 and 8-36..

If you set both scopes to 24x power, are the reticules the same size / thickness?

I have a primary arms 4-14 FFP, but the reticle becomes too thick at full power. So my theory was if the 6-24 became too thick at 24, I could buy the 8-36 and reduce the power to get a thin reticle. But this obviously wont work if they are both the same size at the lower powers.

Thanks!

Also, how are the reticles at full power? Not too thick?

I have the 8x34. Spend most of my time shooting at 24 power, but it is nice to have the extra power if needed. I absolutely love this reticle. It does not seem thick to me even at 34 power. I am going to buy another one, but was considering the 6x24. Thing is the 34 for all practical purposes is the same size and weight and only a few dollars more, so why step down.
