Ataman AP16 Compact - wow!

...well...I am keeping the Tanto... (and the AP 16) (grin)

...I have fired one shot so far and it was enough to tell me I did not make a mistake here...

...I would now agree with "back yard friendly" and "pretty darned quite"...

...it is not like I am going to shoot squirrels when the neighbors have guests on the porch facing my yard...

...although not silent the pellet strike on vegetation is noticeably louder...that distinctive pop is gone...

...this was my defining parameter on "quiet enough"...

...that is what the neighbors noticed before with a moderated Daystate Firefly...

...they heard the pellet impacts when I was plinking and came out to investigate...

...they did not know where the shots were coming from so they went and stood where the the shots were landing...

...I will be looking into Pyramid's quite trap...

...the Uncle Mike's Sidekick Bandolier #13 holster fits this rig like it was made for it...it is a fair to middlin' gun case too...

...a Koi might be a squeeze as the last 2" of the holster taper a bit at the end...

...the Tanto comes right up to the beginning of the taper...

...been a long fukn' tyme...

...latest fan mail to Donny :

...I know you have not exactly asked for feed back but FWIW I really would not want anything bigger than the Tanto hanging off the end of this pistol...

...I am even glad I was able to avoid the Koi...I cannot imagine being pleased with the Sumo on an AP16...

...never mind it's mass, it seems to block the sights which a thing that always bothered ( the fuk outa) me aboot cans on pistols...

...this Tanto is damned near free lunch...thank you sincerely for creating it...

-Hapo

...I keep telling him aboot this thread...👴👍

...this was no build...it was slap together and go...everything just fit...

...and then it shot to point of aim...seriously... EDIT : ...ok, it was a bit high and to the left...(much like the shooter)...but it was CLOSE...seriously... (grin)

...the Barska scope does not flare so much in bright light...it turns out it needs the brightness in sunlight...

...I give it a solid three instead of a barley three....maybe 3.5 stars... EDIT : ...still three stars but the elevation adjustment seems to be reversed...RE EDIT : ...no it isn't...3.5 stars...

...my $29 Hatsun 30mm optic is like this...(apparently Hapo was reversed this time)... 😵

...the Tanto gets five stars...w/o it the pistol would be nearly useless...I wish it was smaller...

...I am docking the AP 16 one star behind the poopty safety...it is not safe...

...the poor attention to detail and high price didn't help...neither does the trigger, although I have not explored the adjustments...

...I rate the AP 16 a very solid 4 stars behind it's accuracy and over all design...

...I am rating the bandolier a solid four stars because I don't care for the snap...if I had stronger flingers I might have rated it a 5...

...FWIW this is a common theme with Uncle Mike's for me...

...EDIT : make that a weak three on the Uncle Mike's bandolier #13...the male part of the snap on the holster body is already cutting through the material on the inside of the holster where it could/will damage the finish on this gun...I am thinking there may not be enough bulk for adequate support behind the snap with this thin gun in this holster...

...in all fairness it could still be used...the gun is secure and it is not like the snap is falling out so much as cutting through the protective layer in the holster...

...over all my satisfaction with this pistol remains very high, high enough so that I am spending more money I don't have, for more stuff it "needs"...

...I am liking how the screws came out...

...I figger to put this here because how many AP16 threads do you want in here...???...

...I just tore mine down and packed it up to return to Pyramid...I hated to to it but was kind of glad at some level too...

...my "tan" compact discharged all the air when I tried to screw a newly acquired and charged cylinder onto it...

...at first I thought it was the cylinder but then the same thing happened when I tried to put the OG cylinder back...

...then the gun would not hold air anymore...

...in fooling around trying to see if I could unstick something I noted that it will charge when cocked...if uncocked all the air leaks out as it is pumped in...

...when I first removed the OG tank it only released a puff of air with no drop on the gauge, but any subsequent attempt to remove or install a charged cylinder results in all the air rushing out...

...I do not know WTF happened but I like the gun well enough despite it's flaws to request a replacement instead of a refund...

(...I bailed on a Flash and then a Marauder when they gave me the chance...ended up with Talon P/Escape...)

...as much as this suks I do get to ditch the "tan" finish and try the standard barrel...still, I was not happy to send this one back...

...I tried talking to the tech guys but a recorded message said to call back later...anyone know what is happening here...???...

From what I have read in threads I have taken part in:

  • The standard is ideal for the JSB 18.1 where the compact is ideal for the 15.9.
  • The standard will get a few more shots because of the longer air tube.

There ya' go - differences. Oh, and it's a little longer.

Hope that doesn't come across sounding sarcastic as that's not the intent. There really is little difference between the two. Maybe one balances better then the other due to the overall length.

-----------------------

I just detuned my compact down to 500 fps with JSB 15.9. I actually couldn't get it that low with the stock hammer spring, so I had to remove the spring and cut two full rings off. This let me get the speed (and noise) way down. Just going from 600fps down to 500fps I doubled the shot count too. I was getting 3 full mags and now I am can get through a full 6 mags.

...well, I am using the 18.1 grain pellets so there is that...thanks...

...I guess I will search the threads some more rather than hammer you with more questions, but...(grin)...how many is "a few" more shots...???...

...I was thinking that the increase in air capacity might make the standard version worth the extra length as much as the increase in power...

...it would seem switching cylinders in the field may not be as Good an Idea as Pyramid made it sound...

...everything was hunky dory before I tried that...

...are we not supposed to be able to carry charged spares to use afield...???...

Here's some stuff I copied from a post I made back in 2017 on the Yellow:

Shot count numbers:
*The compact has a 60cc air cylinder. Ataman confirmed to me that the reg is set at 120BAR*

300BAR fill
45 shots @ 545fps @ 9.4fpe
14gr pellets
6 mags + 3 shots

200BAR fill
20 shots @ 545fps @ 9.4fpe
14gr pellets
1 shot shy of 3 mags

That's after I turned it down obviously. Mine will go down to at least 6fpe, and still go all the way back up to stock power just by turning the hammer spring screw. I see no downside to doing this, they should come this way.

Ha - thumper it was your exact old post I found that got me to cut the spring down a few turns. Thanks for reposting the meat of it here.

600 fps is cool, but dropping it to 500 fps, doubling the shot count and bringing down the report while maintaining the same accuracy in a pistol is even better.

At that time, there was almost zero info out on the Ataman AP16. I was going in blind for sure lol. Still haven't seen any more of those Chinese Remington pellets, I should have bought em out when Cabela's had em.

I agree, they are a lot more fun when turned down. Any kind of little moderator does a good job at 550fps it seems. The thing is insanely loud at full power lol

For pistol ranges and for the stuff I shoot with it, 550fps is plenty and I enjoy it a lot more this way.

Have fun with it!

...noise can be a function of inefficiency...this is worth further consideration...

...I could not quite grasp why one would buy this powerful pistol and then "de"tune it...

...I sent my broken Compact away today...there is still Time to Decide between another compact or a standard....

...should I start an Ataman AP16 Standard - why?  thread...???... (grin)
