Are green pellets suitable for air pistols?

Hi all.

I'm a newcomer in the highly addictive hobby of fun/target shooting. I have recently bought a Weirauch HW75 and a Daisy 717. I'm reading various stuff and try to experiment. How about green pellets? Are they suitable for low power air pistols? I read in various fora that they cannot compete with lead pellets as far as accuracy is concerned, and also that they may harm the barrel (metallic residues that affect accuracy, or even jams). On the positive side, much higher velocities obvioulsy, as they are lighter. What do you think, shall I try them out?

Last but not least, this whole discussion about lead and health issues, does a casual shooter really have to worry?

Thank you all in advance.

Lead warnings and the hype is much about nothing. Yes, lead is bad if you ingest it or breath it in. So wash yer hands after handling it and wear the appropriate dust mask when exposed to the dust how hard is that? I would not think the green pellets would damage your guns although it is harder than lead it is still soft when compared to the steel of your barrel. If you can find a lead free pellet that will shoot well enough to be of worth in your guns and you don't mind paying extra for them use it if you feel the need. I have heard good things about the Predator GTO's but not much else. Me I will stick to my lead slugs and pellets and solder thank you.

Both pistols are single-stroke pnuematics so lead-free pellets won't damage internals from being too light. The best versions I've found are the H&N Baracuda greens and the JSB GTOs with the H&Ns working best in my .22 cal. springer R9. Be prepared to pay a lot more per pellet. I'd stay away from the Gamo stuff.

I think there may be wadcutter versions available from JSB and H&N.

Same here. I've had excellent results with the H&N's and Predator GTO's, but in .177 cal. They work very well to pick up velocity a bit in the P17 pistols and they both also shoot very well out of the Alecto's.

In parallel to posting in the forum, I also contacted H&N. Here is their reply

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your interest in our products.
These pellets will not damage the barrel. Bute we recommend these pellets only for pcp guns with a minimum energy of 7,5 joule.
It could be with lower energy that the green pellet can jam the barrels.
The accuracy would be not as good as than the lead pellets.

So I guess green pellets are typically not suitable for my single-stroke pneumatics (~ 3 Joules). Also guys, how about the minute calliber variations (4.49, 4.51, etc) in pellets?

What is their exact suitability/purpose? maybe just trial and error?

Unless someone comes up with a post that says they shoot well in a gun with the same brand of barrel you have in your guns and for purpose X then you are stuck with the trial and error thing and it can be costly. I have several dozen tins of pellets that do no werq in any of my guns. But I can shoot them at close range when I am too bored and by the look of things I may just end up doing that sooner rather than later. Those tiny variances in pellet diameter can have a large effect on accuracy.

Others may actually like those "several dozen tins". Have you not wanted to list them for sale?
