AR500 plate

Hi Kids!

I have been using a 30x25x3/16 plate as my backstop on my 25 meter range at home. I also have the same size piece of cow mat against it, and another several inches in front of it to deaden the sound.

The problem is that it's too heavy to move when I'm able to go to 50 to 70 yards when my neighbors dont have kids around.

Yesterday I recieved a 24x24 piece of ar500 from someone on ebay. I'm thinking I'll go get a cheap hand cart from Hazard Frought and mount the plate on it somehow. I have another full cow mat to cut up as well.

This is the plate

I would permanently place separate backstops at both shooting distances than have to truck heavy stuff and also have someone build a rock wall at least 6 feet high around the property line and 12 feet facing that neighbor if city-county ordinance allows.

I can only get 50+ yards by using my neighbors property, which they allow me to do if the grandkids arent around. Unfortunately that's usually not in the middle of summer.

I tested my moveable backstop idea and it will work. I just need to ad some sound deadening, and make a target holder away from the plate.

Hey Val, I use AR500 steel a lot too, they stop almost everything, other than the really big boys(Chey-Tac, BMG, etc.). I bought 2" through 14" steel plates for my AR (.223) and PRS gun (6.5x284), they work perfect. Since I have them, I thought I'd use them for everything! I don't know how loud it is when your pellets or slugs hit that cow mat or if that is even a concern for you. If you do want to keep it quiet, hang a piece of thick shag carpet in front of the cow mat or steel plate with the shag facing the shooter or double it up with shag facing out on both sides. It does an extremely good job of muffling the sound, stops any ricochets and costs almost nothing if you buy a remnant from a carpet store. I had a metal plate in my yard at one point with plywood in front to stop ricochets. It was loud though, really loud. I then put the shag carpet in front of it and it became almost silent to my neighbors who live 75yds to the side of my home range. I know at least one of your guns is a powerhouse, probably more. If you want to keep it quiet, thick shag rug does a great job. If you don't care about the report, then just disregard the last 3/4 of my message. LOL

Have a good one Val. Stoti

Well.... I was writing when you were posting. So shag carpet will serve you well. Check it out!

Great idea. The carpet sure would be easier to deal with than the .75" cow mat I have.

I'm pretty much exclusively shooting slugs in 3 if my guns and they are significantly louder when they hit the metal. They are running fast as well so that probably explains it.

Carpet should work great, and can always be folded over or overlapped, and easily replaced.

I personally would use the plate as the 'last resort' back stop and shoot into or at a box with rubber mulch being 6-9" in depth, they're very easy to manage, re-box, are very quiet, can take a lot of energy, and can be made in various sizes (I have a 9x6 box that is 5" depth, and also a 12x16 box that is 8" depth). Amazon prime boxes are great for this, and a bag of rubber much is like 10-15$ and lasts a lifetime. Their only downside imo is needing a new box every few sessions, but same would apply with shooting carpet so idk which is more convenient for you or anyone considering this to replace.

In fact, there is perfect space on that dolly for exactly that ;)
