Anyone hunt their backyard?

Sure- my "backyard" is 40 acres of mixed ag land and chaparral with a dry creek thrown in-no deer but all the rabbits you could ask for along with quail and collared dove. Livin' the dream!

I live in a rural area on 10 acres. I have deer, pheasant, turkey and other critters constantly moving thru the property. Only thing I tap out with my air rifle are possums, tree rats and bunnies. The fox that live in the area, clean up my kills when night falls😉

In my area, feeding deer is prohibited. But two years ago, I did shoot a nice doe in November at 50 yds with a slug.

Were you arrested?😂

I killed 4 deer with my benjamin bulldog last season by just leaving a window open and corn outside. I'd be playing video games and when I saw a deer I would just shoot from my room.

Anyone else do this? BTW - I'm selling the bulldog since I no longer have my property.

OK not to offend anyone here but your question is if others hunt their backyard and hunting isn't killing an animal over bait while playing video games. While you were correct in saying you killed 4 deer you did not hunt them JMO from a guy that has been actually hunting for almost 60 years.

I have hunted varmints out of the windows of my houses, mostly coyotes. I would not hunt deer that way as they are a big game animal, unless I was starving and needed food. I will ask that others be tolerant and understand that everyone's idea of hunting is different. I had a 477 acre farm in Missouri, and I could have shot deer out of the window of my house WITHOUT baiting them, but did not. The area I lived in had so many deer, they were considered by locals to be varmints. It was not uncommon to see 50+ deer in a farmers field eating his corn or soybeans. In addition, the deer in the area developed CWD, so DNR wanted as many deer shot as possible to prevent its spread. In addition to my free landowner tags, I'd get 5 CWD tags that anyone could use on my property. If I used those 5, they'd give me more-all I wanted. DNR hired sharpshooters to kill deer, and they put out corn and used NV (illegal in MO) to do so. I owned that farm for 13 years, and never hunted them or killed a single deer. Is hunting out of your house different than hunting from a deer condo while fooling around on your phone?

Every situation is not the same as yours-just sayin'.

It seems to be a human condition to criticize those who do things differently than ourselves, and rationalize our own choices as if that is the only correct way to do it. Sure, we can debate whether this method is "sporting" or not. We can debate whether it is legal or not, but we should at least do some basic research first. Every single one of us who call ourselves hunters stack the deck in our favor to some degree or another. We wear camo. We sit still. We check the wind direction. We use attractants such as food, mineral blocks, and scent. We employ weapons that greatly extend our reach beyond what our hands can do on their own. What is fair about that? What is sporting about slamming a chunk of lead through the vital organs of a living animal? Very few of us actually need to hunt to feed ourselves or our families. Maybe Troy didn't do it the way some of us would have. But, other than whether it is legal or not, what concern of it is ours? He didn't even describe what he did as "hunting." As a hunter, I hold myself to certain standards based on my perception of right and wrong, as well as an honest assessment of my abilities as a shooter. As long as what he does is legal, then I think I will leave Troy to decide for himself how, where, when and why to harvest a deer. Like cmatera said, every situation is not the same as yours.

Hey if it is legal and want to shoot game out of your window and you can do it safely go for it but don't call it hunting. Game and critters that have become accustomed to humans being around and with no hunting pressure are easy pickings. Now go out in the woods on the games turf and see how your odds of success go down. That is way I don't call shooting game out your window hunting. Bill

OK point taken. According to AirgunBill, co author of the Merriam Webster dictionary, who goes out hunting in the snow wearing only a loin cloth and uses a recurve bow and spear, it it not hunting.

Wow! I read Bill's post as well and did not get anything out of it like that. The OP's primary activity was playing video games in his room. I shoot pests from my home but it is secondary to another activity. I have deer come to the edge of my yard but would not consider shooting them as they are a game animal to be hunted as a game animal. As I said in my original post I meant no offense as hunting is a personal challenge and I gave my opinion as did Bill. I don't think Bill tried to offend anyone as he said if it is legal and safe he should go for it. Again I hunt for sport but eat what I kill and I did not get a deer this year which is unusual but I have no problem with someone shooting a deer from their window for food and I would do the same if I needed it but I would not call it hunting. JMO The OP never mentioned whether these deer were raiding his garden all year and were actually pests. He may have been thinning out some nuisance deer and used the word HUNT instead of shoot. I think what some of us are trying to get across is with all of the anti hunters around comparing shooting deer over a bait from your room while playing video games to hunting is not going to further the sport. It may however appeal to my grandchildren's generation.😉

Yes I would say you should go read the definition of hunting if not in actual practice and not to personally attack me. Bill

Every persons definition of hunting is his/her own. We already have the PETA people to tell us what it is not. No one cares about the dictionary or your opinion(s). The OP asked a simple question. As I stated, many deer and other game are killed every year by guys in deer condos playing Candy Crush while waiting for a deer or other game to come by-what's the difference? In bowhunting for example, the recurve bow hunters railed over the use on a compound bow, oh and heaven forbid using a string release instead of a piece of leather, only they are "true hunters". When crossbows became popular you thought the world would end. What an unfair advantage, having the string held back and just pulling a trigger. No matter if a person can't draw a bow. Same for firearms, airguns or anything else in life. There are major golf tournaments that don't allow golf carts, even if a person only has one leg, and on and on. Let's just agree to disagree. Live and let live, instead of thinking we are right and everyone else is wrong and judging them for their interpretation or the way they do things.

My woods start at 100 yards below my elevated deck. I sit in the woods for squirrels. I have no qualms about shooting coyotes from the deck. My son who lives through the woods, has killed 6 or more coyotes from his front porch. The yotes are .308 fodder though.

It is perfectly legal to shoot anything in season from the porch, window, or deck. Except for the coyotes I just choose not to. I own 146 acres of hunting land about a 10 minute walk, I can see the gate from ny deck.
