Anyone got a Texan .50 ?

Lycky me i got mine just in time for that Corona $h!7. All dressed up and nowhere to go (shooting).

Build me a monster muffler from 20" of ø2" carbon fiber tube and lots of delrin. 5 K-baffles, a large airstripper and some PC cabinet silensing wool. That shut her up fast!

Got 4 different molds in 50 cal and have cast up plenty of each.

@ 380 grains is a Lee 515-450 shortend one lube groove and the original:

A @420 grains custom Lee made for the Swedish/Norwegian 12,7x44R m1867 Rolling block:

And last the Lee 515-500:

So:

@380 grains

@420 granis

@450 granis

@510 grains.

All sized to .510". I have had a Lyman 450 sizer for the past 30+ years and have just recently noticed that the famous H&H dies only comes in .509 and .512. So i had to lube/grease with the .512 die in the Lyman and then go down to .510" with a Lee push through sizer. It's ok... as i can watch telly and chug a tinny or two while.

Got my rifle last thursday at work and we filled it up fast for some "scientific" testing. No sights no nothing, we're men arent we? I brought the 380 grainers all lubed and sized.

Well a 4x4 (pine) and a 60lb bale of hardpacked rags for backstop and now i somehow owe my boss a new Makita angle grinder :)

Do watch your backstop with these lead slingers.

That thing is like a skidding semi in winter, it just ploughs through, on and on and on.

With the new muffler on we can shoot it at work without scaring the poop out of the neighbours, Tomorrow will be fun.

I'll update this thread with pics of my muffler and mods to the Texan.

Stay tuned.

Finally got some range time despite the Corona.

40 shots with the 380grain modified Lee 515-450 sized to .510 and greased up with my own concoction.

Center bottom was first shot and then the cluster abowe with sone slight scope adjustment.

All shots at 55yds~50m and when i get the scope tightned up (it slipped forwards several times) i think i can shrink groups a smidgen.

Oh and i have to learn to hold the Airforce properly, it's "very" hold sensitive!

Those 40 shots took my 9l~549cui CF bottle from 315'ish bar~4560psi down to 270bar~3915psi. Thats 1,125bar x 9l=10,125liter~68½cui of air for every shot from a 250bar~3625psi fill. Not to shappy :)

I tethered the Texan via my Altaros regulator set to just shy of 250bar~3625psi and it worked like a charm.

Now my bottle needs some pump time.

Today i tested the heavier bullets and found this:

The 420 grains will group into one large ragged hole at 55yds.

The Lee 515-450 sized to .510 with grease in the bottom groove will group into a small ragged hole at 55yds.

The Lee 515-500 started to "scatter" but still holds minute of cow ;-)

Left the target in my mates car and will put up pics tomorrow.

That is great results with the lee 450 gr. Did u get chance to get any fps readings on the 450? I was going to order a noe bullet mold in .510 350 hollow point but after seeing u r results with the lee I don't think I will. At the low fps.of a air.gun do u think the hollow point on deer sized game even matters? Another question I was going.to order a lss c.f. 50 cal. but don't know how effective.the factory can.is? I have A lathe and a little machineing experience.. I heard the factory lss r pretty loud. Sorry I'm coming from the long.range.powder burner crowd and have no experience with Pcp air gun

Thank s

I have shot and reloaded for powder burners for the past 40+ years and have found that i like a through and through shot a lot better than just an entry hole (wich thend to close up again). As long as the animal has hydraulics it functions but two thumd sized holes tend to drain fast.

No fps yet but something in the 830fps range for 700+fpe would be my guess.

Are you seeing something at NOE that i dont?

There are .502's and then .512-.517's but no .510's and none of them in 350grain.

The Airforce SS are nice to look at but rather poor at muffling the big report of the big guns.

If you make a decent (as big as possible) expansion chamber and then 4-5 K-baffles then youre golden. That rifle belches out a lot of air and need all the suppression it can get.

noe bullet mold .501-373 hollow point. He said that he could change the diameter to .510. The b.c is around .173. I think from u r results that 450 grain bullet might be the right combo for the 50 texan. I too tend to agree with a complete pass through is important with low fps . Also the large hollow points have to have lower b.c than other designs. Where I live it is always windy and a 200 yard shot on a ground hog in a 20 mph wind might be challenging !!! A b.c of at least .2 isn't too much to ask for😀. Thanks for your advice on the stock 50 lss c.f.. sound levels . I think my buddy has a piece of carbon fiber tube waiting to be used. I was going to buy a aqua regulator 415-6000 . 6000 psi in and up to 6000 psi out for $277.00. Has hand knob adjustable and room for two gauges. Is this the way to go for the money? I am just learning about this air gun s and have zero experience. The internet some times lies especially with dollar and cents involved. Thank much for u r input!!!!

That's a great price on a 6000psi adjustable regulator. Can you share the source?

I think I found it. You will need to ad gauges and plumbing parts, but if you do a great job in sourcing those parts you will still be ahead vs buying from the normal sources.

The Altaros unit is smaller, more compact. For use in my shop I like the type you referenced, perhaps for field use I would prefer the Altaros.

Altaros will do that for under $150 to your door and their regulator works like a treat :)

https://www.altaros.cz/en/altaros-filling-adapter/89-external-airgun-regulator.html

It can also be used as a fill kit without the possibility of overfilling a gun. The pressure gauge shows regulated pressure so wysiwyg (what you see is what you get). They claim it only regulates to 210bar~3050psi but mine works just fine set at 250bar~3625psi (gun max. ;-) )

FYI the ring bearing the bleed valve and pressure gauge on the regulator:

1588273780_21410882485eab22740211c3.33014064.jpg

It rotates to accomodate your wieving angle and the regulator has no "hook up" for a wrench, it's hand tight only and that works 100% with no leaks.

Set pressure "screw" with a flat head screwdriver, test with hose plugged, repeat until desired pressure is achieved. Then forget or scribe down notch.
