Anybody Shoot .177 Pile Drivers with much Luck ?

Hynzie, if you do not mind me asking what gun did you shoot them out of ? I seen an article saying the min FPS for these to do well is about 900 fps. Something with the shape and spin of the pellet. Some have trashed this pellet saying just not accurate other say you need a ton of muscle to make it fly well. If you can get it going fast it holds tight patterns out long distances for a .177.

Your thoughts ?

Yes, it would be great to have the ballistic data across the board. But...

At last count, there were over 250 different pellets available from .177 through .357, and perhaps larger. I haven't counted the number of airgun manufacturers, much less the models and calibers therein. Nonetheless, it would be a staggering amount of work to shoot, group, classify, and qualify the literally thousands of possibilities. Thankfully, we have this airgun-related site, among others to help us choose. This thread is as good of an example as any.

To offset the negatives a little - my RAW TM 1000shooting at 20 to26 fpe shoots the original English PAX .177 Piledrivers well. I have to pick off some lead foil behind the heads.
Here is a fairly typical 25 yd group.
SORRY, the pic is not coming up from Snapagogo. Will try again and then delete the response if it won't show.

They do 1/2" at 50 yd and will penetrate roofing iron at 200 yd and at 300 also if the iron is supported at the back.
The H&N German Piledrivers seem to be a harder alloy but cleaner. Their barrel fit is more critical and they have not yet shown me the same consistency. Perhaps they are a case for a compatable lube ... Regards, Harry....

Here is a 5 shot 100 yd group shot with the .22 PAX Piledrivers. The group is circled and was shot at 51 fpe 880 fps. 4 of the 5 were well under the inch ctc. The coin is a USA quarter/25c. Group shot with BSA .22 Bowkett Hornet.

The other shots were made alternately with the 33.9 gr JSB .22 cal Beast pellets which shoot OK for me to 40 yd then spiral out of control. I think they need a much faster twist rate. They are the worst performers I have seen at 100 yd ( excepting Crow Magnums).

Harry,
I had to mess with snap.... to get a url then saved to my desktop. Naturally you wouldn't do that.

IF the image is on your machine just click to "land scape" icon avove message area then select the location & photo on your machine.
So if I've stored on my desk top, then click second button from left and insert, then browse, then upload to server then okay, just takes a literal second and it is on this server (?)

"Hynzie"seems to me the hotter a gun is the better results,,this one is different as u know ,,my findings are they need the muscle,,to help with any distance and to make them worth shooting ,its a pellet i no longer have on my shelve just not worth while for me
Tried them 10 years ago in my (50fpe) Air Ranger. At the time, it was wearing a custom .177 barrel. I thought that the PD's would be the ticket to ballistic supremacy at that energy level (well over 40fpe) but the results were "Meh"

1" at 50 yards on a good day, flung from a beast rifle. So much for needing more oomph to really shine.

"jaydog"yurran is the RAW a rifle barrel ? Curious what your setting is on those things ? Why it groups well in that gun and basically all the other guns not so well ?

jay
the rifle is a Rapid Air Weapons TM1000 Jay. It is a benchrest rifle made in USA .
The .177 groups were shot with it with a FWB barrel from Germany. But the original LW barrel it came with shot them just as well.
They are slow at this mv so shooter follow-through is very important, think springer follow-through .

The 100 yd .22 Piledriver group was shot with a special high powered BSA Hornet which has a hammer forged barrel renowned for its accuracy.
With a Labradar doppler measured bc of 0.09 wind deflection is only a quarter to a third of that of other very good pellets.

Obviously from others' reported experience the pellets are not for everyone or their rifles. I'm not finished with them yet but my stock is getting low and I will need to work a lot with the H&N German product if they have a real future here. .... Best regards, Harry. ... Not sure any of this is helpful.

Many thanks John.
I will persevere a little longer- with your helpful suggestions. Shooting experience I have; but at 80 yrs I am playing catch up with electronic media intrigue 😅. Best regards, Harry.
