Anybody have an American Air Arms Slayer .357?

I'm 90% sold on trading in my Impact on one, but I want to learn more first. For instance, will my backordered Huggett Magna fit it? My only concern now is the noise level. My Impact 30 generates only 60 dB with the factory moderator. But, it looks like with the add-on titanium shroud and a Magna, the noise level might be manageable. It will be challenging dealing with going from an 80 shot count (w/ a spare bottle) to a 10 shot count, but I do have an Omega 75 cu-ft 4,500 psi tank and an Omega Air Charger now. Plus, going from a 74 ft# muzzle energy to 275 ft#, fuhgeddaboudit!

Yeah, I'm making quite a rapid evolution in the airgunning world. I've been into adult airguns for less than a year now, and I've already acquired quite an assortment of air gun-related accessories and equipment, and traded-up through several weapons. Actually, I'm trying to cool my jets a little and resist the urge to jump into a new gun again right away. I'm really diggin' my relatively new Impact, and I'll shoot that until I get the full scoop on the Slayer. (There is a heck of lot more choices in off-the-shelf pellets for the .357 than for the .30!) It's fun to window-shop, though :)

Had the Slayer for a while now and I can tell you it is a very high quality peace of work that is very easy to tune to get 300 +fpe if desired! Gun is very accurate though I personally only have shot out to 100 yards but others have shot much further with great results. I also took a doe at around 35 40 yards this past deer season in Mi using a Mr hollowpoint 140 grain .Also I don't think that hugget will work with the slayer but you may want to contact Tom AAA owner to find out for sure.If your looking for high quality power and accuracy you can't go wrong with the Slayer!

Thank you so much for that, ck2020! I believe I'm 100% sold on the Slayer now. I will wait until I sell my Impact first, though. The Huggett Magna would not work anyway because it's made for a .308; I don't know what I was thinking. How loud is it? (Did you get the optional titanium shroud?) In videos I've seen, it sounded pretty quiet; but videos can be deceiving. How many regulated shots per fill do you get?

Here's my .357 setup. I've had it for about 3 weeks and have shot it quite a bit. AAA advertises a 3-5 week wait for delivery but mine took 3 months.
It's not as elegant as a Daystate or Air Arms, but VERY well machined in its austerity. You will NOT find a burr or ununiformity any where on it.
Most of the weight is centered at the grip and trigger which makes it feel very light at the muzzle.
The Slayer comes in .308 as well but no conventional LDC on the market will fit it. The thread pitch is unique solely to this platform. I'm currently in communication with John Hagan (who owns a Slayer as well [.308]) to get a custom LDC made for it because it's loud as hell...well...all my other high end guns are 'indoor quiet,' and it is a .357, so of course I'm going to perceive it as loud. Back yard friendly? Hell no.
I opted for the aluminum shroud and it pings reminiscent to the Marauder. The trigger is sweet...very predictable. And I'll be Damn if it isn't accurate! I only have 90-some-odd yards to shoot from and quarter size groups with John Cripe's (Pelletgarden) 129 gr slugs are effortless. Listen, anything shot at center-mass with this thing at these distances is getting destroyed! AAA advertises 6 shots on a 3500psi fill, but I'm getting 10 easily out to 50-60 yrds with very little drop after the 6th...and 8 out to 90yrds before i noticed a discernible drop.
The picatinny rail aft of the breech can use a cheek rest, the grip is Magpul (easily swapped out), and the mags are all metal quality.
If you had the option of getting in to 3 cars in your garage, one being a Benz and another being a BMW, the Slayer would be the mint 68 Mustang or SS Chevelle with stock interior but with a big block under the hood! Mean motherf#€ker!
@marcella69...I know you've handle some quality pieces lately from your posts. And while I was mad ass hell waiting so long for mine to ship, it was well worth the wait. You won't be disappointed, bro.

Rumor (we'll, fact) has it, Nielsen Specialty Ammo is close to releasing a new .357 bullet that's similar to the .45 version I've been testing in my Texan. If they shoot as well, oh boy will .357 be the hot set up. I will gladly trade a little bone-crushing FPE for a faster, flatter, easier to shoot (accurately) round. Like @ddransoml said, it's going to destroy whatever it hits. Bullet expansion is limited or nearly impossible below a certain speed. A hot rod .357 HP may equal (or probably surpass) a lot of .45 bullets in terms of hydrostatic shock. I could be reading a page right out of Roy Weatherby's diary right now, hahaa.

BUT - before I'll plunk down the cash for a AAA, I'd like to feel confident they're going to be around a few years from now. Whenever I check their website it's the same. I mean, are they barely hanging on? Or do they not care about marketing or engaging the consumer?

My .02 cents (maybe worth what y'all paid for it)

Brian

Brian, I asked Tom Costan the same thing during a conversation. I was concerned about available parts and service. I also suggested he update his site...especially the approximate ship date.
Tom comes off as a good natured dude (whenever you can get in contact with him). He assured me he always read his email and that the company isn't going anywhere any time soon (for whatever that's worth). I'm pretty sure he operates on a skeleton crew (MHO).
I actually handled a Slayer prior to getting one. Its performance sold me immediately.
This is a serious machine so I don't see too my people flocking to it. It's an open range shooter...don't even think about back yard shooting with it if you have close neighbors.

Your post is extremely helpful, ddransoml; thank you :). I am concerned now about the noise. My Impact makes only 60 dB with the factory mod, which is fine for me. It seems the Slayer is too loud for my purposes, unless the optional titanium shroud will quiet her down or I can find a custom moderator. (I'd really like to get some dB numbers.) Damn, I was all ready to put my Impact on the market! I have very specific needs; a bullpup design and quiet are mandatory. I like the Impact 30, it fits both those bills; but at 74 ft#, it just doesn't have the oomph I want. Actually, 275 ft# is more than I need. I also like the new RAW HMx .357 which is advertised at 130 ft# regulated, but it is conventional rifle length. (It appears to be backyard friendly.) Power commensurate with a .22lr is what I'm really looking for.

The titanium shroud, per Tom, changes the pitch of the sound...I seriously doubt it'll dampen it much.
@marcella69...if your purposes are so defined then this gun isn't for you. Tom, in a post on the GTA forum (there's a section devoted to all things AAA...boys over there helped me out a lot), said he gave nielsenammo a prototype LDC for the Slayer to test but I haven't seen any updates on it.
???????, uhhhhhh, nielsenammo, you still there?

Neil Clague is up for the task but is catching up on previous orders. I found John Hagan via Donny fl's suggestion so we'll see what comes to fruition.
Man, if someone can effect stealth for this thing it'll be THE big bore hunter out there.
I'm just saying....

Well, ddransoml; I can't say I'm not disappointed. I was really psyched about the power of this beast. But, this is what I like about air guns. The industry is really exploding technology-wise, much like the firearms industry in the latter half of the 19th century. I'll just keep my ears open (pun intended ;-)) for my dream gun! Can you imagine a platform like the Slayer that is quiet with a fully electronic action? Fuhgeddaboudit!!

"nielsenammo"AAA will be around they are selling plenty of guns to keep moving forward and they have a lot of great designs in the works. The new EVOL will be a great pellet platform to round out the line up and more in pipeline.

AAA I believe will become the big bore leader that the others will try to strive for. The guns are built to last and Tom is not just some guy with a lathe in his garage. He has a full CNC shop that is quite impressive.
Thanks, Nick. I really respect your opinion, so that helps a lot. Keep up the good work!

"hvack"Hey marcel is your impact a new version ? If you have it to do all over and didn't have an impact would you risk getting one again , ( that had no issues) ?
hvack:

I guess it was, since it didn't need the replacement probe screw. I no longer have my Impact .30. I sold her to buy a RAW HM 1000x .357 (130 ft-lbf regulated). I had no real issues with my Impact, except for a minor bottle leaking problem caused by frequent swapping-out of spare bottles. But, I use a pony bottle now in the field, so no more field-swapping of bottles. I bought an FX Wildcat. 25 for my small-game hunting needs. I do not need all the adjustability of the Impact, and .25 cal. is plenty power for bunnies; plus the WC is lighter and more stream-lined.

How does the raw compare ? is it heavier Will you be carrying it in the field ? how is the accuracy in comparison ?
