Any NRA air rifle silhouette shooters here?

Ron,

I haven't done it since my .22 LR 3 position days, but Rich Bassett from Falls Township does one with air rifle, and I believe air pistol as well, might be wrong on the pistol. He tries to do it every few weeks during nicer weather. I've been meaning to get down there and do it, but time has its limitations.

When the comrades in Contra Costa County and in Sacramento allow us, we shoot airgun silhouette the first Sunday every month in BayPoint (Concord), Kalifornia.

In addition to the NRA rifle regiments we make other forms of silhouette shooting available.

We have:

Varmint-where you can shoot off of the bench vs offhand.

For example: Long distance pistol shooting the NRA rifle distances but with your pistol, off of the bench.

Some shooters practice their FT skills using the silhouette targets.

We also run air pistol silhouette using the NRA targets at the pistol ranges: 10. 12.5, 15, 18 yards.

In the pistol category, we have open sights, pistol sights, varmint and, others.

Something for everyone.

The video was shot outdoors a few years ago.

We are shooting custom targets that are re-set from the shooting positiion saving the walk to the targets.

Now we shoot under a covered roof, rain or shine...

We shoot airgun silhouette at Falls Twsp. Rifle and Pistol Assn.( near Phila., PA). Check our schedule a FTRPA.org.

We also shoot lever action and pistol silhouette.

Nra Silo used to be much more popular but interest has declined. There are still matches within driving distance from here for almost all silo disciplines.

The Nra has done a poor job supporting the sport among other things like it is mostly offhand and rather difficult. Seems as if people want everything to be easy these days.

If you would like more info let me know.

It's not just air gunners not wanting to shoot Silhouette. There has been a decline in high power, small bore and pistol as well. There are not any airgun silhouette shoots in my area either. I shoot them in my back yard. I have some that are on a hinge that I use mostly. I was out shooting some of the loose chickens today. Man those things look cool when they fly. The resets are nice but I love to see them fall. I guess I would rather shoot silhouette than any other discipline.

Seems that the interest these days is very much biased towards the various forms of benchrest. Nothing wrong with that, I like it too. But, I also find it disappointing that there isn't more interest in the disciplines that embrace the different forms of traditional, position marksmanship. It's great to have equipment that can shoot tiny groups, but, it's also satisfying to train yourself to hit your target in a more practical style of shooting. I guess FT is a good compromise. But, service rifle and other position shooters are the folks for whom I have the most respect when it comes to marksmanship, and silhouette shooting is certainly one form of it.

Sounds a lot like our club. We have the regular NRA classes from air gun to high power but our director finds a way to pretty much allow you to shoot whatever you have.

I haven't shot silhouette in years and miss it. No silhouette matches in my area. I also prefer shooting free hand rather than bench shooting. Shooting off a bench from a rest definitely serves a purpose but I'm a hunter so I don't want to have to rely on having a bench to hit something.

Ron, I was a avid NRA smallbore and Highpower shooter before COVID hit. I have stayed away from both disciplines during the pandemic to keep the wife happy. She fears that I might catch COVID and die and or worse give her COVID and she could would infect aging mother.

So the keep my sanity, I purchased a PCP air rifle( FX Dreamline) , Yong Heng pump, air rifle targets scaled for 20 yards and 15,000 pellets. I shoot every day when the outside temp is 50 degrees or warmer. In Colorado at 40 degrees and below the PCP is inconsistent and flaky. I have to come up two minutes from my 70° zero and I have to come left 3/4 of a minute. The gun shoots low into the right when it’s cold.

I am attaching a couple of photos of my backstop and of my heavy duty air rifle targets scaled for 20 yards. Targets are 3/8 inch thick and take a beating.

During the cold winter months, my club (Benchrest Rifle Club in Wright city missouri) shoots indoor air rifle silhouette matches several times a month. The building isn’t large enough to use the NRA regulation distances so our course starts with chickens at 10 meters and rams at 35 yards. What’s really nice is the course is almost always open unless the room is needed for reloaders during a large benchrest match. My wife and I just went yesterday for a few hours to kill the winter/covid blues.
