I really like the benefits of FFP scopes and am eyeing up (scuse the pun) the MTC Optisan 4-16x44 EVX FFP F1, but it is not available with IR which I would prefer. I have no affiliation to them just happened to have joined the forum today and saw your post... Didn't see a newbie "introduction" either page so this is my first two pence worth...
Have you also seen the Falcon scopes?
This one has an IR and is FFP, I'm not sure what it focuses down to though.

I don't own this exact model but had the non IR version on a Theoben MFR 28fpe and it was a solid and dependable piece of kit (currently on loan to a friend who has it on a ruger .22lr and is also very happy with it), I wouldn't say that the width of croasshairs was thick but I guess it depends what you compare it to.
If I was looking for criticicisms it would be that it is a heavy old thing, and that the "bars" where the crossshairs end (don't know what they are called) are solid black and kind of thick which I found distracting sometimes but that is probably just me.
