An observation regarding chamber lube and breech seal leak.

Well last nite I spent some time with my Crosman Nitro Venom Dusk 22. I installed a set of Hawke Low Weaver Scope Mounts, with a Hammers 3x9x32AO scope. Set a ply board out at 15 yards and drew about 20 1.5 inch circles on it. Dialed in the scope and spent the better part of the evening spinning my 1 inch spinner target. Manged to hit 27 out of 30. I was happy about that.

Well today I finished up with work early and decided to set my spinner target out, to 18 yards, shot the small spinner and hit no problem, then I began to miss over and over again......Hmmm thats odd, it was dialed in yesterday. I remembered I lubed the chamber less than 200 shots ago, but maybe it needed lubed again???

I dropped 2 drops of RWS Chamber Lube down the hole and sure enough the accuracy returned. I then decided to check the breech seal for leaks as it looked flattened out and shiny. I cut a piece of paper towel and shot it safely toward the hillside and sure enough it leaked bad. I removed it and looked to see if I had any O Rings that would fit it. Nope, its an oddball squared profile type so I didnt have any. I flipped the seal over and reinstalled it, repeated the test and the leak is sealed up.

I guess this leads me to a couple of questions......

1. Maybe I should start lubing the chamber every 100 shots or so. Any of you lube the chamber more often than every 500 shots?

2. Where do I get quality breech seals, preferably much better quality than stock Crosman seals?? The stock ones are a tad short, and really hard.

"ajshoots"For the money, the Rugers are a pretty good buy. I have a Air Hawk (RWS34 clone) that with a simple demurred and lube shoots really good. Thanks for posting the oring size. I will have to see if they fit mine.
Demurred?

I am starting to think maybe I should buy a Ruger Targis 22 springer, since my Blackhawk Elite has been so dialed in. I dont know why some days I can drive tacks with my Crosman Nitro Venom Dusk 22 and others I get 3 inch groups at 20 yards? I did the trigger mod, checked all the bolts, lubed the chamber, put a good scope on it, and replaced the breech seal........I am about to rob my Hammmers 3x9x32AO from it and bolt onto my Blackhawk!

Maybe I need to replace the Nylon barrell washers with brass ones??

I've been talking with Tommy of mac1 about his thoughts on heating the gas tube after installing new seals on my Crosman 160 .22. He says to warm up or heat the tube so the new seal will seat properly on the gas valve inside the tube when first using under pressure. Even the 160 Co2 tube is under about 900PSI pressure.

"ajshoots"I meant deburred. This new phone has the worst auto correct and I wasn't paying attention.

The plastic washers are known to wear out and cause issues. That could be your issue? How much have you shot the Crosman?
Prolly has almost 1000 rds thru it. I went thru and did the trigger work, loctited/greased the barrel pivot when new. Havent been into it since.

Worn nylon bushings suspected? I found a guy on GTA named Gene who sold CNC brass barrel washers for Crosmans but looks like he has since gone out of business? I wouldnt think the washers need a tolerance fit, realistically they should only be eliminating side to side play and the bolt, barrel tolerance should do the brunt of the work??

"ajshoots"If you want the gun to shoot how it used to, the washers will need to be an exact fit. Breech fit is very important and I would recommend spending the time to hand fit brass washers for best results.
OK will do, I will pick up some Brass washers next time I am at Lowes. evidently the 5/16 ID washers fit exactly into the crosman barrel recess, the OD must be turned down to fit.
