An experiment to get .22 cal NSA's to pop open easier. It works !!

Looking at the speed that you’re already shooting slugs tells me one thing. If you’re looking for better expansion, the rest of us should really be concerned. I would venture to say that not many of us eclipse 1,000fps with our slug guns. While we get to enjoy better ballistics with slugs, I believe there are only a couple slugs out there that truly do their job as a hollow point. I think we are being bamboozled. A loud pop on a critter is just a heavy slug that didn’t slow down like a pellet. Probably nothing to do with expansion in a lot of cases.

Mabey in the future nsa will offer a modified hollow point similar to this, I would imagine it would be as easy as modifying the die. Just would need a demand for it or enough people asking .

Gentlemen I absolutely agree that for many HP slugs we as consumers are left to "ASSUME" a hollow point miens an expanding design as in firearm projectiles .... Not true sadly being most DON'T. The larger caliber NSA's open up well enough, smaller .22 & .177 do not !! This due to the hole / pin diameter used IMO.

In my world NSA's are very affordable and the quality is outstanding. When you find a good combo in a specific weight / diameter with the correct speed VERY accurate.

This modification to the HP cavity is my POOR MANS resolve in using cost effective slugs for a purpose biased towards PESTING and not super long range high BC better than a pellet type shooting. While this mod correctly applied may very well shoot out far better than a pellet ? .... In close the destructive and flesh tearing expansion trumps any pellet I've ever shot say perhaps the HADES .... But they don't even expand this well IMO.

poops and giggles .... Try it or not and decide for yourself if it works supporting the reason you shoot slugs while saving a boat load of $$$ over purpose built expanding slugs.

More testing ...

Using the "0" size jewelers phillips it has thinner edges already and far more symmetrical than a reground #2 tip and self centers far better as well.
Same Tap tap tap with the light hammer has the X being IMO very consistent with some practice.

Todays test was using the .22 cal NSA in the 24.8 grain weight which has a known deeper HP pocket. still keeping the X inside the meplat.
Test again into a water jug @ 20 yards shot at @ 940fps. Unmodified slug passed right threw the jug. Modified opened up to .460" being over DOUBLE the caliber diameter ... Wowzer

Whoa!?!?!? That is pretty awesome. Have you tried 12.5 slug at low speed? I’m going to try that myself later. If works then it would knock the socks off of critters.

Not tried slower ... being this whole experiment was based around getting the small caliber NSA's to open up at all. Both my dedicated sluggers in .177 & .22 are very hard shooters as i use them.

I don't think the 12.5 has a deep enough HP cavity to really mushroom at velocities 800 or lower ? tho just a WAG .... try it and report back please.

We used to do this with 22 rimfire and pellets when I was a kid (called them dum-dums lol).

Anyways, this gives me an idea to use a broadhead arrowhead with my press. I have a couple with removable blades (one has 3 blades and the other has 4 - razor-thin). Might have decent results seating them high in a sizing die with the arrowhead penetrating concentric 🤔

I tried that with one that I had in a drill press but didn't like the way it pushed the sides of the cone out. Maybe a different design broadhead would work better to get a clean concentric slice.

Follow up on this idea applied just yesterday for a pesting issue .... SKUNK !!!

Taking a 15 grain NSA in .177 cal did a heavy X with a OO phillips tip on 3 slugs. G dam skunk caught in the hava-a-hart and need to end it !

Generally I'll do heart / lung shots and let em ball up & expire and they don't generally spritz ... generally.

We're in a dry spell around here and know it it spritz's the stench is going to be here for weeks !! ... so I'm going to try a VERY PRECISION SHOT to get at the brain stem and see if A 100% Lights out / Switched off shot can be made ?

Distance @ 20 yards, take a shot into target box at same range, note POA / POI correction required and make note. On target ... make a few squeaks to get it looking right at me ... Place the shot above right facing eye and slug exits dead center back of neck at skull .... Dropped like a stone, only a few drips of red and not even a twitch and no stink !!!

That little .177 NSA HP-X at @ 1040 fps did a wicked job for sure !!

H&N Grizzly slugs expand very well. The biggest issue with NSA slugs is the sidewall is way too thick..I get better expansion using the NSA 142 gr going 770 fps than I do with the 79 gr going 950 fps, and I feel that's all because of the thin sidewalls on the boat tail round.

Both rounds shot into a 16" Block of Clear Ballistics Gel 16" long.

I stumbled onto this Orion video on using silicone in the hollowpoint cavity to enhance expansion. I am guessing the fill needs to be able to move/squish at airgun velocities in order to push outward, and this is what led to the selection of silicone. Maybe there is a fill that works even better, but silicone appears to be a good start.

Combining silicone fill with the physical scoring discussed here should provide for even more expansion.

Very curious about the result of combining both.

You can fill the cavity with a bar soap, paraffin anything that can fill it. The silicone really works
