Few photos from a squirrel hunt that I had yesterday in Upper Mobile Delta WMA in south west Alabama yesterday. These squirrels are out in the wild, the WMA is an 50,000 + acre wilderness of sloughs, creeks, rivers and swamp land; the squirrels there are not feeder dwellers, there is an abundance of natural forage for them. Yesterday was a very good setup from a weather stand point as a front was on the way to move through the area mid day. I’ve noticed that the squirrels get very active on days when a front is coming through. Yesterday was particularly good as the colder weather coming in created a good amount of fog and dampness so it was easy to move around without being detected by the squirrels excellent eyesight and hearing. Also as you can see from the photos the trees still have a good bit of foliage. Yesterday as they were feeding in the trees, I could locate one introduce it to the Taipan Veteran 22, go pick it up and typically see another right away. I had two squirrels on the ground on several occasions before moving to pick them up and sitting again. 10 or 15 minutes would pass by and I would see more activity in the trees at 60 to 70 yards out, a little slipping through the woods to get into good range....and THWACK, the Taipan would strike again. It was a GREAT DAY. Could’ve taken more but limit is 8 per day in Alabama. Season ends in March as the winter months come the trees will lose their leaves and it will be time to pull out the Vulcan 25 for longer distance shooting. Last year it was awesome fun to take them at 70 and 80 yards, can’t wait for December and January!
