Airgun Target Systems first impressions

I havent seen much around a new product called the Airgun Target System so I will provide my first impressions on it. I was looking for a replacement for my backyard duct seal target I have and to alleviate the mess its creating and the culling of pellets from it while ensuring its quiet when impacted by pellets.

I usually dont write reviews but the Airgun Target System looks like it will work really well for the backyard shooter. I initially saw it on Rick Rehm (Shooter1721) Facebook page which sparked my interest. I am all for giving the local guys a chance so I contacted the owner and found out he was only a few states over from me, and since I was going to be in his area for business I asked if I could stop by and take a look at it before I purchased. Steve is a really nice guy and down to earth person and an airgunner. He showed me the product without hesitation and even let be test fire his airgun into a panel at his 25 yard backyard range and after seeing the product and the quality I decided to purchase one and give it a try.

I have to say these things are heavy and built like tanks. Also they are all weather because he has them sprayed with a plastic liner similar to the ones used on a truck bed. I got the ¾ inch thick, long version. Steve said ¾ inch would be best for my HP Red Wolf .22 which is roughly producing 55 ft/lbs. The next day I had the chance to experiment with it and pellets do not penetrate the material at 25 yrds. Even when I did pellet on pellet groups roughly 20 pellets in two areas they just piled on one another (damn it was windy that day) and didn’t go through. The material he uses just sucks them in and they stay there. I noticed its just as quiet as shooting into duct seal which is a big plus. I wouldn’t recommend it for slow traveling steel BB because it could ricochet but for pellets it did its job. Also since its all weather I can just leave it outside without worry about it falling apart. Steve said after a while the pellets will pile up a bit and you can just brush them off or leave them there and they will fall out on their own so you can put a tray at the bottom to catch them. Its not cheap but what quality product is and I think its good value for the money? Steve did tell me about the material used and the ballistic fabric which is imbedded in it but I will be honest that went over my head. If your interested I would reach out to him via facebook , search for Airgun Target Systems. He said they are working on a webpage which will go live shortly. I says its worth it for the basement and backyard shooter. He did tell me he is testing another panel for big bores and higher caliber airguns as they are currently rated for .25 and below.

Here are some pics.

Hi Michael,

The pictures 3 and 4 show the targets pinned to a corrugated board (I think those the picture you are referencing) which are standoffs to the ballistic material behind it. The ballistic material is 3/4 inch of rubber/Kevlar shown with tape measure and that is fixed to backstop of 1/2in hi density mdf board.

The testing i showed the pellets not even making it though half way through the ballistic material even when shooting pellet on pellet.

Of course I also have this mounted via the hanging holes on a cinder block wall which I have as another precautionary , over kill but with duct seal i used previously and summer months its density changes with heat so always safe than sorry.

I hope that helps. When it comes to what the ballistic material is best to contact the owner as I do not want to miss represent and he has been working for a while for the right material and density to be safe.

Hi everyone, I'm the designer of the Airgun Target Systems Ballistic Panels. There was a question about the backboard material. It's simply 3/8" MDF. We haven't had an issue with the pellets getting through to the MDF. We can also provide panels with an aluminum backboard, but they are expensive and so far we haven't had an issue. My phone is 203-598-2084 and our Facebook page is Airgun Target Systems. Our webpage is currently under construction by a company in Wisconsin. I have been slow getting them all the content they need to finish the page. But the FB page has all the information about the product and the different models available.I can honestly say that after a year of work and design and testing many custom orders of rubber we appear to have come to the right ansswer. BTW, it's not Kevlar. It's a generic ballistic fabric that we have specified be vulcanized into the rubber. Lastly, I'm also the founder of the "PCP Airgunners Information Page" on facebook and the "PCP Compressors & Tanks, The Good, Bad and Ugly" on facebook and lastly "marauder, Armada & Bulldog Owners (and Disco's too) on Facebook
