airgun hunting in Washington state

Careful, it may be better to "lump airguns in with slingshots," than to call them "firearms" like my state does. I can't buy one without a firearms ID card, MUST purchase it from an FFL holder, CAN'T have it shipped to my house, and absolutely must not be caught with a gun that is at all moderated for sound (regardless if it is manufactured that way or not, legally classified as a "silenced firearm" and is a 2nd degree felony just to possess). Only way for me to legally sell one within state lines is to transfer it to an FFL holder for shipping to another FFL holder (even out of state), which costs both parties more money. My state overreacts out of ignorance and fear...let's try to keep that to a minimum, please. It seems less likely that someone will break your stones over something perceived more along the lines of a slingshot (also illegal in my state, go figure) than some jerk wanting to make the "big bust" because he recognizes your Benjamin Trail as an opportunity to charge you with possession of a prohibited weapon/silenced firearm....sheesh!

Where do you live?

I too live in WA (Kirkland) and researched the topic. Keysersoze's response is spot on. Just got my small game license that lets me hunt unclassified game (which most notably includes gray and fox squirrels, nutria and many other weird species I did not know someone would even consider hunting, such as shrews and moles).

One thing to note is that when I mentioned that I am planning to hunt squirrels, I was almost handcuffed on the spot. The master hunters running the course did not know about 'unclassified' status of eastern/fox squirrels. This worries me, since I'd expect similar level of literacy from game wardens, and really not looking forward to litigating with the state to get my confiscated gear back. So, thinking to always carry printouts of those regulations with me.

This said, never been outside of my backyard. If you ever plan an outing and would like a company - give me a shout, I would love to get in touch with fellow airgunners.

Cheers,
Greg

I'm also from Washington and looking for some good pesting/hinting buddies. I live down in Castle rock but willing to drive. I have a few permission areas down here for Starlings, H. sparrow. And in the late summer for crows. But a licenses is recommended even on private property and pest control. The wardens around here are horrible. There's only 3 of them but you know what I'm getting at.
