Air Venturi AVENGER Wood Written Review (.22 cal)

20210725_143650.1627319691.jpg

I just got this .22 wood AVENGER from Pyramid Air. ($429 or $349 for synthetic). The synthetic weighs 6.3 pounds, the wood is 7.3 pounds. The first thing that stuck me was the beauty of the stock. It's finished to perfection. No flaws, and the rounded curves around the egdes are a nice touch. The stipling on the grip and forend is also awesome. This gun has a side lever, externaly adjustable regulator, 2 guages (one for air pressure and one for the reg.), dual rails on top for pickatinny or dovestail scope rings, pickatinny rail underneath for a grip or bipod, sling swivel studs installed, 1/8 foster fitting built into the gun (no fill probe required), barrel band (aluminum), and thick rubber buttplate. It also has a VERY deep dark black finish on the metal. It's noticeably dark, deep, and flawless. The contrast against the light colored wood stock makes this a very good looking gun! 300 bar fill. 2 stage adjustable trigger, breaking consitantly at 1 pound 11 ounces out of the box.

When I went to film my 35 yard accuracy testing: I thought I may have to tune it, but it was shooting 18.1gr FX pellets at exactly 890 feet per second...no tuning required. The regulator reads 2900 bar. I sighted it in with one shot., The next group I shot the first one and hit the bullseye, the next one seemed like a good shot, but I couldn't see where it went, the next shot too. "Am I on the paper?" 2 more shots with the same result. On shot 5 I realized they were going though the EXACT same hole...not even touching the sides of the hole. So the gun put my first 5 shots though the same .22 caliber hole. This qualifies as the best group I ever shot at 35 yards. Then the gun did the same thing again. Then again and again, and so on. Is this an $1849 Cricket 2? That gun was crazy awesome...but honestly, this $429 Avenger shoots exacty the same as far as accuracy. Rick at Airgun Web TV said this gun would be a good value at $650, let alone $429. My opinion is that Air Venturi could have asked $1000 for this gun, and people would have happily paid it. There is NO BETTER VALUE in the airgun world than an Air Venturi AVENGER

...last thing...It had 3 flyers out of nearly 300 shots. It was one about every 80 shots. 60-80 shots per fill for sure (wasn't counting). Comes with 2 mags and a nice aluminum magnetic single shot tray.

Long story short: here is the 3rd group I shot at 77 yards (18.1gr FX pellets by JSB @ 890 FPS) 16X power on that HAWKE Airmax 30SF scope

I thought the wood grain showing through the stipling was super cool.

Must have Pickatinny Bottom Rail (see that front sling mount?)

Put some lock tight on those screws if you don't plan to take that rail off.

Your Dual Scope Rail fits 11mm Dovetail or Pickatinny (21mm?)

Already has a barrel band. ..and it's aluminum! (3D printed barrel bands are a common upgrade people put on thier PCP's)

No fill probe! Hooray!!!

(empty ALL the air / turn reg all the way in counter clockwise / back out 1/4 turn / air the gun back up / Now you can watch your regulator guage and turn it UP ONLY!! until it gets to your desired reg pressure. NEVER TURN REG DOWN WITH AIR IN GUN)

Congratulations! My 25 caliber synthetic stock Avenger is not quite that accurate but I routinely get 1/4 inch or a little smaller 33 yard groups with JSB or FX pellets. I bought H&N FTT with the gun and it hates those. But once I got some JSB pellets I have been very pleased with the accuracy.

I was hand pumping when I got it and turned the regulator down to 1800 initially. Pellets that were accurate at that level are also accurate at the 2200 regulator setting I have it at now. I chronographed as I went up and stopped at 2400 psi regulator. I gained so little velocity versus 2200 or 2100 I degassed and went back down. I don't really understand why AV ships it with a 2900 regulator setting. I also don't think mine got any velocity increase from increased hammer spring tension until I got up around 2400. But it did increase accuracy noticably to use a little more hammer spring. I increased the hammer spring 1/2 a turn past the point where velocity increased and group size went from 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch.

Enjoy.

Getting started in the world of airguns. Saw one of these at my local shop.

Yeah, There couldn't be a better first gun. Definately shoot one if you can! 18.13gr JSB or 18.1gr FX pellets are great.

It shoots Crosman Premeirs pretty good at 35 yards. These are 5 shot groups I just shot in mild wind:

I don't really understand why AV ships it with a 2900 regulator setting.

I was wondering why my reg was at 2900, but then it was still shooting 890fps. I expected to have to turn it down to get it to 890fps. I wonder if the latest batch is tweeked a little bit. Rick turned his down to 2100 and was till shooting 930fps. My reg is definately at 2900.

??? wierd ...

The reg screw turns in clockwise, and is backed out counterclockwise 1/4 before repressurizing.

I love mine. It shoots CPHP pellet on pellet.

I've seen this discussed on other forums, and I think I'm seeing it on my now-wood Avenger: the front pic rail is fastened by a screw through the forearm to the bands around the shroud and reservoir. I found this out when I replaced the plastic stock with a wooden stock. So fastening bipods on the front pic rail might be yanking the shroud (and the barrel) around a little bit. I saw a POI shift of about an inch at 25 yards. Once rezeroed it's happy again, but still.

Also, for those of you planning on swapping your plastic stock for a wooden one: the screw on the rear of trigger guard attaches to the receiver, and the screw that comes with the plastic stock doesn't reach the receiver when it's attaching the wooden stock to the receiver. It wants an M5x40 black socket cap screw, that was not supplied in the box with the wooden stock.

I sound like I'm griping a little bit, and maybe I am. I still do like the Avenger a lot, though.

Yup I love my avenger 22. It sees more action than any other rifle I own and is right there with any top end rifle in accuracy. Fit and finish on my first gen wasn't great but for the price you can't complain. 35 and even 50 yards is boringly accurate with this rifle. It will do sub moa about 50% of the time at 100 yards for me and I don't consider myself a stellar shooter or anything. Get you a cf tube off ebay to replace the super thin and fragile shroud. I want to say its 25mm od 23mm id. The wood stock I made for mine definitely helped with poi changes that the plastic stock would give you.

So my new .22 wood Avenger delivered this morning,, living within an hour of PA does have an advantage. ;) It's a beast! Not heavy .. but loooong....especially once I added a Donny, and.... it still has quite a "bark".... compared to my quiet Donny FX Classic and whisper quiet HW110ST, I think it may even be louder than my Condor SS.... but no way a deal breaker.

Pulled a couple EESOX swabs through the barrel and cleaned a pretty good amount of black "coloration" from it. Mounted a UTG True Hunter Classic 3-12 in Hawke 30mm medium rings with plenty of space for the mag, this is a nice looking rifle - combo.

Took a few shots at the basement range to check zero and found a shim would be needed in the rear ring for better internal adjustability. Once I set up on the back porch at 50yds, only a few JSB 18gr pellets and it was ON.... not as ON as Nates' pic with FX ammo, but decent enough for my first session, and I found it will shoot 16gr AA and 21gr H&N 'Cuda Match to the same POA with close enough accuracy to make any 'coon sized back yard critter wish it woulda stayed out of the back yard.

Now, here's a question for those of you having this rifle, I've adjusted the trigger weight screw OUT probably 1/4 inch (it was IN factory flush to the trigger) and I still measure 1.75lb, would prefer a bit lighter yet.... What have the others found? Thanks for your replies.

This morning I chose to loosen the trigger screw farther, just for experiment, IF the pull would actually loosen up any more... it didn't, removed the screw completely, still pulled at 1.75lb. The illustration in the manual "seems / appears" to show a spring in the cutaway view... I found no spring, the screw was quite greasy with the same sort of lube that I removed while cleaning the barrel. I re-installed the screw deeper than what it was when I first started to adjust yesterday and found a 3+lb release.... so I'll likely just live with the lightest setting, unless I attempt the other members' option of trigger work.

I also noticed yesterday at my un-packaging of this rifle, the forward pic rail was unevenly fitted to the stock, I didn't investigate then, but today I found the rear screw loose and it wouldn't tighten... so I removed the rail completely and a flat washer fell out from between the rail and wood ? no reason it should've even been there ? so now I had to remove the stock completely and figure this out. As soon as I separated the stock from the receiver and tubes, a small nut fell out.... that's what should've been holding the rear rail screw... but the washer between the rail and wood wouldn't allow the screw to thread onto the nut ? ... can't figure how (if there is Chinese quality control) this ever got past and shipped? But it's all good and secure now. ;-)

Shot a few pellets over the chrony this morning also.... the reg is set at 2600 with tank pressure above 3200, shot JSB 18gr @ 935fps AA 16gr @ 985 H&N 21gr 'Cuda Match @ 866, and as I mentioned in yesterdays' post, these all shoot / group "close enough" at the same point of aim. If this accuracy stays the same or gets better... this is a heck of a rifle for entry level money.

I have one as well and it does shoot well. However it hasn’t and still isn’t all roses. Out of the box the front part of the pic rail was super loose and caused the gun to shoot really low. This however was an easy fix once I figured it out. My reg hasn’t been absolutely great but then again it is a 300 dollar gun so the adjustable reg is an expected weak point. Mine creeps a bit. I have it set to around 1900 psi. The creep causes about a 20 to 25 FPS spike on first shot. Not a huge deal as I don’t shoot but 40-45 yards. It is worse if you try to run the reg at lower pressure. Mine out of the box seemed pretty stable at 2900 but that is just a stupid high wasteful setting. If you do some online research this gun being sent back for reg problems certainly isn’t unheard of. However other than the little creep it has been really good. Just waiting for it to go down as I honestly think it isn’t a matter of if but when it breaks down.
