Air Venturi Avenger .22 cal: The Best Budget PCP Airgun Ever?

https://youtu.be/MFzTgyRmhdE

I am going to make a bold statement: The Air Venturi Avenger in .22 cal (and most likely all other calibers) is the BEST BUDGET AIRGUN I have EVER shot! PERIOD. I have gotten a couple jabs (rightfully so) on my social media channels that I only show airguns that cost more than my first car (which by the way was a rusted out 1984 Chevy S-10 I bought from my Dad for $1200 and a full summer of lawn mowing). I think that critique was fare so I set out to rectify this. I gave myself a $600 budget to build out the ULTIMATE budget airgun kit.

So here it is! So first off the actual gun itself.... At $299 the Air Venturi Avenger is packed with features you will find in air guns 3 times more expensive. It was like Air Venturi and Pyramyd Air got a bunch of us airgunners into a room and said - what do you want? GO! The thing that jumped out at me right away was the externally adjustable regulator! But I was hooked once I got behind the fully adjustable trigger and dare I say.... match grade!

Without touching a thing I burned through a full 10 round magazine (which by the way it comes with 2x mags and 1x single shot pellet tray) with pellet on pellet accuracy zeroing at 25 yards. Moved out to 50 yards and check out this group slinging 18.13 JSBs at 880 FPS! That is just nuts for a gun in this price range with ZERO tinkering! Other items worth mentioning....

The Avenger has a Max Fill Pressure of 4,351 PSI (300 BAR) which gives you a TON of regulated shots. Unlike a lot of other budget guns that come with fill probes, this comes with a foster fill port under a cap at the end of the air tube. LOVE the safety and cocking mechanism. SMOOTH and I mean like butter smooth. I love the picatinny rail that comes with it under the front for bipods and IR lights. The top scope rail is slick in that it accepts both picatinny AND dovetail scope rings.

When you pick it up it does feel very lightweight and plastic-y so don't get me wrong, it doesn't feel like a $1000+ gun. But from a features and performance standpoint this gun checks ALL the boxes. Let's add some accessories to round out the $600 budget! I reached out to Yolanda Du and DonnyFl to do a quick test with one of their adapters for the Nova Vista Liberty that looked like the same size of the end cap on the Avenger. She sent one for me to test and sure enough - it fits! So now you can run a DonnyFL TANTO Suppressor and at only $99 it makes the Avenger into a mouse fart gun! It was decently quiet with the empty shrouded barrel - but with the DonnyFL TANTO it is Hollywood hit man quiet!

To round out this ultimate budget kit I went with UTG QD Medium Rings holding a Hawke Sport Optics Vantage 4-12x50 (saved $70 with a refurb). Gave her some locking legs with a UTG bipod and was ready to rock!

Curious to see if it’s better than the Liberty.... (in other words I’m skeptical)

I think it is made from the same parent company, but the importer (Air Venturi) worked with them to modify the Liberty design add in some features to make it even better than the Liberty. Fully adjustable hammer, fully adjustable regulator, foster fill port instead of a fill probe, piccatiny AND dovetail top rail. All of those features make it better than the Liberty for sure.

@antoni, a foster fill is definitely better than having a probe you can lose. I saw your previous posts about your issues with the Liberty. The Avenger is an entry level PCP so some of your concerns seem overly stated. In the review it shot impressively at 50 yards. It did seem loud in stock form, keep in mind that is is but an entry into the PCP world, where some PCPs cost north of 1.5K

I would love to agree with you but I can't. Just because it has more features doesn't mean that it's a better product. The Liberties regulator was adjustable, allbeit a bit imprecise, but adjustable. A double rail seems usless for 90% of people and IMO it makes the rail look bad. Also, is that rail plastic? If so, then that's a downgrade IMO because in my experience plastic rails tend to last way shorter than metal ones. I see no difference between a foster fill port and a GOOD fill probe, which is what the Liberty had. It has a smaller cylinder and I don't think its titanium. The fully adjustable hammer and regulator are the only +s I see to the Liberty, although a beginner would probably rather a low and high power wheel over a mico-precise hammer/regulator adjuster. Just some personal thoughts and opinions.

I will say it looks like Air Venturi took the fit and finish aspects of the Liberty and put the costs into functionality to keep the price at $299. Does the Liberty have an adjustable regulator or just the preset High / Low hammer spring adjuster? I thought it was a set regulated platform.

Quick clarification, I just did a scratch test on the rail and it is in fact metal, but the breech area is covered in a polymer material similar to Magpul polymer rails. 100% disagree with thee fill probe vs. foster. When I go out to shoot I often bring 2 or 3 guns with me, all of which have foster fills (except my Air Arms S500 which has that screwy fill cap thing that I absolutely hate) so having a standardized fill port is a plus.

I will also disagree 100% that the fully adjustable hammer and regulator is only for advanced users. I see airgunners - noobies and veterans - chasing MOA groups and doing all kinds of exotic stuff with their guns in the attempt to get there. Being able to control regulated pressure and hammer spring are the MOST important things to accurizing an air rifle.

Furthermore, in the .22 caliber we now have access to a VERY wide range of pellet and slug options that we have never had before in the past. Everything from 10ish grain pellets all the way up to 25 grain pellets and slugs. That wide range of size and shape differences need a greater amount of adjustability that just a High / Low setting on the hammer.

Being able to push the Avenger up to 38 FPE is also a HUGE plus for me as a hunter. Most of my small game hunting is 50 yards and closer so I can crank this rifle up to 3000 PSI with maximum hammer spring and at that power I would be able to take game up to the size of a racoon, fox, or even smaller coyotes here in Michigan. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. It seems like an excellent product considering the features, and very impressive when cost is considered. Time will tell and some will always like and dislike certain aspects of any product. I don't need one but may well try one anyway.

Please ignore my previous posts. I guess I don't like the Avenger because I got the Liberty a month before this was released....
Now that I'm hopefully back to reality, I would like to say that good on AV for coming out with a .25 version. That lacked in the Liberty and now those people that wanted the Liberty but not in .22/.177 can get a similar airgun. I just have my fingers crossed that they fixed the poppet issue. If so, then this is could be a perfect budget airgun.

Issues with liberty:

bad o-rings, o-ring on bolt probe instead of barrel prone to marring

reg creep common (very unacceptable amounts in very short periods)

weak poppets (majority owners report breaking these)

terrible parts support (need to just send gun in for replacement if you happen to break a part...woohoo)

empty shroud (shroud with empty space no baffling, thats a cheap fix but come on...)

possibly more? I never owned one, these are recalled reports from those who have.

If they didn't fix 4/5 of the above, I have zero interest in the Avenger.

I don’t know about reg creep, but for the rest yeah your right. The empty shroud is no biggie for me—it’s pretty quiet without it unless pellets go supersonic. I just hope they fixed the o-ring issues.
