air guns are fragile

"thumper"If I had a gun that sensitive, I'd get rid of it.

My HW100 has the barrel band removed, and it is not sensitive to bumps or POI change at all. I lean it on trees, and never had an issue.

My Webley Spectre (FX cyclone) has a free floated barrel and never an issue.

I had an Air Arms S500 and it would shift the POI if it got handled slightly less than carefully. Removing the barrel band fixed that too.

So I'm not a fan of barrel bands, provided the barrel is sturdy enough to hold itself straight. A gun that flimsy has no place in my safe.

That is good info. If I find my Marauder's zero changing, I'll try removing the barrel band.

Did you mod your Mrods barrel band to hold the shroud? If not it doesnt touch the shroud so removing it will do nothing for poi problems. The only way for a factory Mrods barrel band to effect the poi would be if the band is off center and pushing on one side of the shroud. If thats the case then align it so its centered around the shroud.

LDP is correct, as usual. I thought the Mrod band had an O-ring and when I installed one the accuracy went south. After checking the parts diagram I realized that the band does not touch the barrel shroud , surrounding it only to keep the barrel/shroud from moving too far off line if bumped and banged.

And by the way, I agree with the original post. My experience with PCP's is limited to Benjamin products but I read about the issues with all different makes and models. It's hard to convince a powder burner friend about the values of an airgun when I have to tell them to treat it like it was fragile.

I like a set screw barrel band on my marauders more for scope centering than anything else. But, I also have a .30 Marauder I built that is bottled and has no barrel band. Gun leans on the shroud in the safe all the time and never a POI issue. I have owned well over a dozen different Marauders in all different configurations from stock to full custom builds and have yet to have one that has exhibited poi shifts. Although, I still prefer a band that somehow clamps down the shroud/barrel.

Been shooting PCP airguns for many years and have owned them all. Hands down the most reliable, no POI shift are my Theoben Rapids. For many that are new to this field these were the guns Rapid Air Weapons are based on. Ask AZ which gun are the most robust, reliable and accurate. He will tell you : Theoben Rapid. Are there lighter guns, yes! Shorter, flavor of the month bullpup, yes. But the Rapids are in a league all their own. :)

"John_in_Ma"Let me ask you this. At what price would you consider taking better care of a PB? $500, $1000, $2000? Also how much would you be willing to spend on a PB with the same type of accuracy you can achieve from a high end airgun and then just throw it on the dash?

I would never think to just throw around, on the dash or behind the seat a 3000-4500psi potential bomb. In that aspect only every pcp should be handled with care regardless of potential poi shift.

About being fragile, I have very few worries about the 3K psi in my gun what is fragile is that pencil thin bbl. loosly held in a short block with a couple of orings and small set screws. Powder burners operate at up to 65K psi and are built accordingly. I can lean any PB rifle against the wall and have no concerns about a shift in poi, not so with my air gun. Think I am going to take AJs advice and convert my front bbl. band from a floater to hard fixed.

Believe it or not,
I LOST A WHOLE WALTHER DOMINATOR 1250!!!! The housing was so fragile that it cracked open due to air pressure. One day I zeroed my Rifle at home and then took it back in the field, while going there I usually put the rifle in the trunk of car, when I reached the hunting area the barrel was bent and I couldn't shoot an elephant with it lol.Threading the Tip of Barrel for Silencer was also a poop.As the barrel also bent a little bit while Locked on the lathe machine.Sometimes poop happens.Though walther uses poop Aluminum Metal In their rifle.
