Air force texan accuracy-need help

I got a .308 texas this summer . With about 200 pellets down the tube , groups do not seem tight at 30 yards . I am get about 3 to 4 " groups . Shooting off a bench with a bipod and rest . I have checked all the typical cases -loose scope rings and mounts .

Do I need to give it a longer break in ? Cleaned the barrel at 150 shoots.

This is my first air gun, but I have been shooting rifles for 15+ years . I have a steady shoot with other guns/bows

I agree that you should try some NSA ammo and some Hunters Supply, they actually will say what grain slug works the best for each caliber, my Texan .357 shoots the Hunters Supply 127gr very well, I’m getting about a 1.5” 5 shot group at 75 yards and my Texan .45 is shooting 220gr NSA ammo pretty good and is getting about a 1.75 - 2.25 5 shot group at 75 yards.

I have to admit that I am shooting my Texans tetherd off the bench at 2800-2900psi which helps my groups but the main thing is is that at least I know I will have at least two shots off tank if I’m walking that will be accurate and it only takes one good shot to put food on the table or fur on a rack, but then I have to admit that even in my deer stand I still shoot tetherd being Im not walking and stalking just sitting.

I will definitely try Nielsen ammo. I'm shooting a few different air Venturi bullets right now. The flat nose 133 grain seem to be the favorite but still very inconsistent. This was about 40 yards I feel like the group should be much tighter. I do watch the gauge, which is strange because the gun shoots better around 2000 psi

Yes sir, keep trying ammo. I've tried 2 different AV bullets in 3 different rifles and they never worked.

The advise of getting with others is excelent and you can learn as much in one day as from a year of reading. You rigs is very tunable and I'm certain it all seems pretty straight forward and you can/will figure evry detail out, but a fellow airgunner can save you a bunch of trial and error and it adds to the fun factor.

I concur, contact Nieslon Ammo and/MrHollowpoint about potential slugs. Its a long barrel different configuration for a rifle for most, and takes some practice. I have not had the .308 as texan, but have had 4 Texans and they take some practice. Ive also had two .308s and do love the caliber. You mention at 2000psi as being optimal, however not the velocity. The psi sounds low to capitalize on what otherwise would be typical fast twist rates for slugs. About the only thing I can shoot at that psi and have the velocity is round ball. Needs some fps readings, maybe I missed it.

Find the sweet spot in the fill if you’re shooting for groups. Limit the number of shots per fill, and be robotic with your technique. Try a firm grip and pull into the shoulder. My .45 Texan shoots ragged one hole at 30 yards. I have a .308 Slayer that’s sub MOA at 100 yards at a similar power level to your .308 Texan.

...and don’t waste your time with anything other than NSA swaged bullets. There’s a reason they dominate big bore at EBR.

Hope this helps!

Brian

1. Yes, NSA slugs blow all the Hunter Supply away and Air Venturi I've tried away. (Areomagnums are good also). Make sure it is ONLY . 308!

2.Buy a mad dog stock for weight to keep it still.

3. Then, if you have not all ready, find the 4-5 sweet shots in the power curve and only use those.

4. Buy a harmonic rubber ring and put it at one the barrel.

I shoot the HS with my Texan .357 and the NSA with my Texan .45, MadDog and Limbsaver Sharpshooter dampener.
