Air Force Texan .257 long range targets

Took the Air Force Texan .257 with Doug's Mad Dog stock, shooting 90 grain Griffin slugs 200+++ yards today. If I do my part these shots are routine. Winds mostly left to right 10-13 mph. Zero'ed at 100 yards and dialed 32 MOA at 280 yards to true up Strelok's dope card. Shooting tethered at 2950 psi. This stock makes long range shooting much better!

I got the 257 LSS last week from PA.

Yesterday I ordered a Mad Dog Bulldog stock, have a Arsenal 257420 boat tail mold coming and a NOE .258 sizer.

I removed the valve return spring today and I have been looking hard at the .5L carbon fiber 4500 psi tank.

This is my 2nd run at a .257 airgun, the first was a Haley 257 Scandalous with inter-changeable 36 inch TJ Barrels, a 1-14 and 1-10 twist. It was the last 257 Jack made.

If you google Roachcreek 615 yard airgun shot on 12 oz cola can, you can see the Haley in action on utube. At the time that was considered the longest airgun shot to date.

My son has a house boarding BLM land, getting ready to shoot some steel.

It wasn't the best day for long range but we did it anyways. Mixed cross winds at different distances and heavy gust right to left 15-20 mph.
I finally got my 300 yard gopher shot on camera.

Texan .257 - Griffin 90 gr HPBT - 975 fps - 2950 psi tethered @ 300 yards - winds 15-20 mph

Ordered the cf 4500 psi bottle and a valve removal tool today, pretty close to having it ready. Need to know more about after market springs and hammers.

Thanks for the kind words insix.

Contact Doug Noble ( Dyotat100 ) because he has just the right hammer springs so you can fill up to 3600 with your CF bottle and not get valve lock. The stock spring just doesn't perform on those over 3000 PSI fills. Also, the mod of pulling the the valve spring and the spring retainer (a big choke point for the air flow) will get you an extra 50 FPS BUT be aware that both this mod and the AirForce TX2 valve copied from Doug's research will have some bottle dumps below 2000 PSI. There's compromises in everything.

FYI - I've had super good luck with the 85gr NSA BTHP in long range shooting but I also dry lube by putting my bullets in a butter tub, adding in about 10 grams of Hexagonal Boron Nitride super slick "White Graphite" and then a squirt of FinishLine Bike Chain Lubricant (which solvent dries to a soft wax)... close the lid and hand tumble over and over for 8 or 10 minutes to spread it all over the bullets, dump out on a silicone baking sheet and let dry (a whole day or so, and not use a hair dryer). It's not messy like oil lubes: doesn't pick up dirt in the field as you handle the bullets or get oil from your fingers all over everything AND keeps the leading away.

Sorry...a little late to thread. Now that I'm officially home and not working I'm bored and catching up on some posts. In response to the questions earlier about the .308 bullets: best two I've found have been the NOE 308-154-FN-BF2 in both standard and h.p., and the Arsenal 309 FNGC 110 gr. (I think...custom job as part of a group buy)

The Arsenal is the best all-around bullet I've found. It's just as accurate down range (sub 2" at 200 yards) as up close and coupled with the flat trajectory it's also the most forgiving elevation-wise. The NOE 154 is a winner, especially at 300+ yards and beyond. As far as over-the-counter ammo the best by far (that I've tried) is the NSA .309 128 gr. h.p. My Texan likes everything sized to .309 and the test slugs that Nick sent me did really well. If I didn't cast my own that's what I'd be buying. I've used Air Venturi, Hunter Supply, as well molds from Lee (155 and 118 gr.), Arsenal (122 gr.) and NOE (134 gr. FNBT) The 134 is pretty good as evidenced by how much other shooters like it. I found it to be okay, but the other two performed better out of my gun.

All bullets are sized to .309 and lubed with 10 wt. rc shock oil. Cheapest 'mod' ever for improved accuracy (lube) I use the 10wt. as both sizing and shooting lube.

My gun is 100% stock with the exception of Mad Dog stock.
