AGT Vulcan 2 Tactic - poor consistency in FPS, ideas?

Hi, I've had an AGT Vulcan 2 Tactic for 6 months and its never been consistent - sometimes it shoots great, then suddenly all over the place (pellet on pellet to 3" groups at 30yds). I recently got around to buying a chrono and was horrified to see the results! I'm in the UK, so limited to 12ftlbs and I'm using JSB Exact Premium ammo 4.52. Charged the AGT to 190 bar and this thing is all over the place. Any ideas? Thanks, James

I would have to say that is a pretty consistent spread, especially if it's regulated. I would think that's more a barrel issue potentially if you're getting 3 inch groups at 30 yards. As well it may not like that particular pellet. I would also have the barrel checked at the crown (tip) to make sure there are no imperfections that are affecting the pellet skirt as it exits the barrel. But that's my opinion.

Your numbers aren't too bad at all. A slightly different angle on any shot or a damaged pellet may add a few fps difference also.

Call it a 20fps ES and at 30 yards you will never notice any difference in poa/poi even at 50 meters a 20fps spread is going to be a very small difference ( 1/4" maybe a bit less).

Clean the barrel, check the crown, check all screws on rifle, scope, other and please do keep us posted.

- might not hurt to post some pictures of groups, some folks might be able to give additional ideas just by looking at the groups

That really is not a horrible fps spread. But, 3" in groups at 30" is a horrible for accuracy, although. TNT19 is probably correct, it is probably not a reg issue. First start with the barrel, clean really good, if nothing happens...then look at the moderator or shroud for clipping (if you have one)...then check the mag to see if the pellets are getting scratched up during rotation...then if everything looks okay...then check the scope: the mounts, rings, and scope internals. I found that a crap scope may make you think you have a problem with the gun, when in reality you don't.

15 shots is a small range to measure but agree with all the above. a 21FPS ES isn't your 3inch group issue at 30y. I don't know how the Vulcans do at .177 12fpe speeds overall so can't compare the ES to anything meaningful. I would start simple.... try different pellets and make sure your scope mounts are secure to the rail and the scope within the mounts. I've made that mistake before - snugged everything than find out a week plus later that things were moving.

You're extreme spread is fine.

Remove your shroud and shoot a group... you will probably need ear protection but not sure at 12 fpe.

Have a Vulcan that was clipping the shroud and would group as you described , but with the shroud removed was hole in hole , plus extreme spread became more consistent.

Contacted AGT explained and new one sent.

You can also enlarge the holes in the shroud for additional clearance just don't go overboard as sound will increase.

Mine was threaded poorly and would wobble as it was screwed on and off.

Yes, I agree with Lemensd. Check your shroud for clipping first.

But I want to question you about your pellet choice. You said you use the "JSB Exact Premium ammo 4.52 "

Are you talking about the expensive pellets that come 200 to a box?

The reason I asked is I've tried them and several friends who shoot field target have tried them and we've come to the agreement they just don't group anywhere near as tight as the regular JSB Exacts in 8.4 gr? The premium pellets are shorter and look nothing like the 8.4 gr Exacts? I've searched google for picture comparisons, but can't find any at the moment.

Anyway, try the shroud check and please try a tin of the regular 8.4 Exacts and see if groups improve. I know I tried the Premium pellets in a Cricket I had years back and I went back to the regular Exacts because they just grouped better, even unsorted?

Ha, found the picture comparison of the premium vs the exact vs Air Arms. See how short the Premiums are? They just didn't do well enough for us guys in the field target game? The box came in handy to put my regular sorted and weighed JSB Exacts in though ;-)

Thanks CampFussel ... yes, definitely, the ones that come in 200s. I've not tried AA pellets, so will get a tin to try. I thought the 'Premium' pellets were just selected 'Ordinary' Exacts so should be the same dimensions?

I'll try and take off the moderator and go out this week.

The thing that confuses me the most is that it'll shoot great for say 20 shots, then suddenly all over the place, even after a recharge, or half-way through a cycle ... not found the pattern yet!

Somewhat delayed entry to this thread but was compelled to add my story.

I've also had the same issue with my vulcan 2 tactic (.177 12ft lb), straight out the box it was shooting groups arranged vertically up to 3 inches high at 40 metres.

I remounted the scope, cleaned the barrel, tried 5 different premium pellet brands, choreographed it with reasonably consistent velocities and have now given up and am having it shipped back to the manufacturer.

Extremely frustrating after reading all the positive reviews and having paid so much to have a product that doesn't perform as expected. I assumed these things were product tested prior to release from the factory..... Anyway. Will just take a peek at the shroud as mentioned for 'clipping'.....

Final post- AGT can find no issues with the rifle. Leaving me confused. After a somewhat slow process of investigating they have offered to refund me the cost of the rifle, which hopefully they will follow through with.

I suppose I must conclude that it I am the weak link, pulling shots 3 inches high off a double bag rest with a perfect sight picture on a windless range....

This concludes my return to airgun shooting. I have an anti-insect salt firing pump action air powered shotgun. I am deadly with this out to ranges of 12- 16 inches.

Hi Just purchased my first Vulcan 3 in .177 caliber and did some initial testing with the chrono. The standard deviation (using FX chrono) was higher than expected and primarily caused by 1 or 2 shots out of ~15. I have a 20 ft lb gun and I would get consistent 795-805 fps and then 1 or 2 at 820+ in the string. This was the first time shooting the gun and I probably put 100 FX 13 gr pellets through it so more testing this week and I'll provide detailed results. The gun was shooting very accurately however so no complaints there! For the next shot strings I'll sort and weigh the pellets to eliminate any variance there. More to come.

My threepeneth. I bought a 22 Vulcan 2 in May last year. Initiately it was down on power (around 10.5 fps) but the dealer soon had it sorted. It is now pellet on pellet accurate out to 30 metres with a variety of pellets such as H&N FTT, Bisley L R G (bit of a surprise those) and JSB Jumbo Express to name but a few. It will also shoot polo mints edge on at 25 metres.
Anyway I digress. On the strength of the above, in July this year i bought a 177 version, which is just as accurate and even more consistant:-
eg:- JSB EXACT high771, low768, variation 3fps..........BISLEY LONG RANGE GOLD high791. low787...variation 4 fps. These are over 10 shot strings with full air cylinders of 250 bar. I could name another half a dozen pellet brands that give similar results, which goes to show there are good-uns out there, Luckily, I havn't suffered the issues of the OP and I would assume he has tried all the suggestions offered.
I would also be inteeested in seeing if he's got it sorted after all this time or if it has been moved on.
Cheers.
