After the hunt

More-so after hunting then target shooting. How do you unload? I don’t mean relaxing! I am talking about unloading your weapon. While target shooting, I have no problem taking a last shot at a target. Thus, I am unloaded when returning home. But what about while hunting. I thought about this today after squirrel hunting. I returned to my truck and unloaded my Flashpup by shooting it into the ground. No big deal. I was 1/2 mile from anywhere. The pellet wasn’t going to reach anything. On my .22 and .25 cal guns, it’s not as big of a deal, but if I am hunting with the .40 Badger or the .45 Bully it’s a different story. First off, I don’t want to launch a slug just anywhere. Second, at .50 or even $1 a slug, that is a waste I don’t need or can afford. So I have been carrying a cleaning rod in my truck to pop the unfired slug out. I do take great care to put the rifle on safe and while holding on to the side lever or bolt, I carefully run the cleaning rod down and pop the slug out. I don’t like leaving a slug in the barrel even if I can uncock the gun. All it takes is for someone to simpley cock the gun and it’s ready to shoot. At least with my muzzle loaders, You have to come up with cap that would be located elsewhere.

On the expensive slugs, I'd just suggest you don't chamber one until you're ready to shoot. Totally depends on what kind of hunting you're doing though and of course it's up to you. I'd love to hear some other options, I certainly wouldn't want to be ramming a rod down a barrel with a .45 slug in the pipe. That could go real bad real quick. I know you can un cock it but that still makes me really nervous!

Durning deer season here in Mi. I have about 6 weeks of hunting. Deer gun, muzzleloading and late doe seasons. I hunt most every day of them. That’s roughly 40+ days afield. That’s a lot of wasted slugs. The slugs haven’t hit rifling and do not get deformed from the ramrod backing them out. I was just courrious what others did. Perhaps I should have made it a poll. Not really looking for advice of what I should do. But thanks for your Opions.

I apologize if my response to you’re question “How do you unload?” Was mistaken as my opinion as to what you should do. It was only meant as a statement as to what I do.

If you’re question was meant to get alternative ideas on how to salvage the slug without pushing it out with a cleaning rod I don’t think there’s really any better way to do it or better tool to use.

If I’m not mistaken (so if I am please correct me) the Umerex Hammer shoots the bullet straight from the magazine. I think I heard it described as a “chamber magazine” actually. So the magazine acts as the bullet chamber also. So my understanding is that you could unload the gun by just removing the magazine and decocking the gun in a situation as you describe. Safe to do and saves you’re ammo. That actually makes a lot of sense and is a smart design and maybe more manufacturers should incorporate such a design into their guns.

You did not say anything wrong or incorrect. I don’t think I worded my original post as I ment for others to take it.

It would be nice to have a clip, mag or even a cylinder like a revolver where you could have the gun loaded but on an empty chamber. Chambering a round would be no more of an issue than say, drawing a bow back. You probably wouldn’t chamber a round every time you went out hunting. But if you did chamber one and didn’t get a shot, wasting a slug now and then would be doable.
