Aeon Athlon Aztec Delta Hawke Leupold March MTC Optisan Sightron SWFA UTG Vortex

The scope I got rid of was an AEON , I have zero issues naming names LOL . Beauty of not being sponsored I just do my thing . All my reviews are tested at 38 yards ( it's where I have my picatinny rail set up out back ) and the Aeon was moving about 5 inches left and right at that distance. NO BS .
I know the scope has never been on a Springer or even a Centerfire rifle ...It was parked on top of a 22.
It blew my mind to see that much POI in just the slightest focus change .
I am talking with a guy I know in a few days to find out if it's a design thing with side focus or what .I for SURE will make a video to show what I'm finding out ....I do know this . I've tried every scope I own now and the front A.O. scopes , and rear focus scopes have shown almost Zero error .

Thanks, Joe. That is great information I hope you get to the bottom of soon. I suspect I haven't noticed the phenomenon on any of my scopes yet because I blame it on the wind blowing my pellet around. I shoot at a lot of different distances so this is a huge issue I am just being made aware of. If side focus is the problem (Say it ain't so, Joe!), I'll happily keep shooting with my current favorite front focus Leupold and rear focus SWFA and quit my bitchin' about them not being side focus. In fact, I guess what I now consider drawbacks would become benefits overnight.

I should have been filming that all along but it wasn't till I had the fixture mounted on my desk I could be sure it wasn't me moving the rifle / scope when I focused it .
Locking the scope down removes all doubt . My tracking tests aren't as entertaining as watching someone shoot the box test BUT it takes the shooter out of the variable and shows only optic performance

Fun review(s). I think "jps" is onot a point, some of those models change up really fast and with NO mention of any change, and/or QC changes up a lot.
I have seen really outstanding "bugbuster" scopes, and 2 really poor ones. Leapers swat- I've never seen one that worked at all but some people like them so I was just twice unlucky? Used the Aeon 10-40 yesterday at 75 yards, NO shift w/power change and no discernible shift when clearly out of focus at that range,
yes somewhat blurry at max power.
On clicking, THE important factor for any FT shooter ( even hunter, admit it you play with clicks), a low power mildot hunter rig, who cares just so it works as set.
Any scope used for target must repeat! Hawke has the best warranty in the business ( and it is used ) and IF you catch the right model at the right time the glass is outstanding. And again, I am sure some of them - atthe higher end of the line- are good but I have never had a Hawke that would track repeatably, never. Good for BR ( ? really? I want wind clicks even more repeatable) but not if you clcick a LOT.

Then again when a Lupy 35x goes out and you get to talk to a repair agent that knows there stuff they do say thing s like " you know the reason you wore it out is you used it"?
They know target shooters click, a lot. If you shoot everyday, click a lot everyday even the best wears out but most of us should never run into that so.. .

These days when dealing with lower end scope esp. it may be somewhat like buying crosman premier pellets in a tin, if you get a good one grab all you can from that batch.

So who makes a good glass, light weight scope w/20x in the lower price range ( need 20x for my eyes, anythong over ehh)

"mmahoney"Added my new Optisan EVX 6-24x50 First Focal plane with MH24 Reticle to the comparison. After a couple weeks of use, I have a new Champion!
What is your main use for the Optisan scope? I have the Optisan 3-12X44 and love it, but I want a higher mag scope to shoot WFTF at the local field target ranges. Have you done much ranging with the scope?

Hi Dragon64,

I haven't done any ranging with it. I mostly shoot targets with it at various ranges and use the parallax to get the target in focus. When pesting I use a laser range finder. The parallax adjustment knob focuses from about 8 yard to infinity in about 1/2 a turn of the knob. I think this would make it a poor choice for WFTF because the entire focus range is crammed in such a small area on the focus knob. I suppose a side wheel would allieviate that problem somewhat.

Just a heads-up to those thinking of buying an Optisan scope. The warranty is NOT transferable. I should have researched this better before purchasing the scope as there is always a good chance I'll look to sell a scope down the road. If the scope has defects from the factory, Optisan offers free parts and labor, but not shipping (you pay both ways). My scope has faint pieces of dust on the first focal plane reticle that I'd like to get fixed. Now that I see them, I can't unsee them. I hope that makes sense.

Trenier Outdoor took the scope back without questions. Just a real quality and class act. I buy all my pellets from Trenier because they have the best prices and pack the pellets exceptionally well.

On the Athlon Argos, the complaints of mushy turrets are true. The fix involves cleaning off the super thick lubricant and putting on a thinner lubricant, then it clicks like a pro.
The lack of stop set on the vertical turret can frustrate some people as well. If you call Athlon, they will send you a washer kit for free, which allows you to set a zero stop for the vertical turret. For windage, this is not an issue.
