Accurate slugs at 102 yds, 5 shot group

So I’ve said this before, and have been told two things

Slugs weren’t as accurate at short range as pellets. And,

Slugs weren’t as accurate as pellets at 100 yards in low wind conditions.

I beg to differ. 102 yards. 5 to 7mph wind swirling. .25 NSA 43.5 at 900 FPS. .25 Impact shooting 78 FPE. 1/2 MOA, 5 shot group.

Centercut, funny you should mention this. Last Wednesday I went to my friends, to shoot for the second time, the Maverick sniper .22 After upping the reg 10 bar and adjusting the HS 1 1/4 turns, then testing poi, I ran my first string with the JSB KO shot @ 910. My first group on a 3" target was 4 shots measuring 3/8", and , I just couldn't take the 5th to wreak the group 😆, but, none the less, it is the best group I have ever shot @100, ever. Each group after all the excitement was at least MOA or less. I have learned that slugs can be very accurate if I have the right tune and I do my part.

A thanks to you too for always sharing wonderful details, testing and how to be a better shooter. This is the results for me.

Haha. I said the latter, time and time again, but that was a while back. I totally agree with you now. It’s pretty crazy how fast slugs and liners have improved and how many options are available now. Everybody should be able to find something that will work now. You know I shoot the Slug A liner too but I haven’t tried the 43.5gr. Looks like I need to. The groups I got with the standard Superior liner and the Hybrids absolutely blew my mind. Six months to a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed it!

Awesome group. Great shooting. I had my fingers crossed for that fifth shot that wind wouldn’t shift. It’s the shot yo the right. Thought about going for ten... but maybe not. ;)

Looks like you really got that thing shooting now. Great werq!

Thanks bio!, The tuning of this Maverick seemed easier for me than my Impact, not sure why, but I'm glad it werked 😁

Centercut, I do follow the same protocol with my pellets and slugs like you and nomojo65. This tune and (my) barrel seem to be very good in the Maverick. I like the accuracy at the lower speeds of 910 for the KO @100 but I'm betting I need to find similar accuracy out to 160-225yrds for Prairie dogs here in CO which means higher FPS for flatter trajectory at those distances. I will work on my part of the equation.

100yds+ is a tricky area to be accomplished in, but very exciting when you have the right tools to do the job. Right now I am very happy.

I did order 5 tins of the JSB Monster RD after you so eloquently shared your experience and data about them in a post that convinced me the right pellet will out preform a slug @100.

I will also say this Maverick shoots the FX Hybrids amazingly well too, but they are a little to light for my needs. I will go heavier in my tunes for the longer slugs and higher BC along with being a more stable projectile.

Shot again today for a couple hours, mostly 102 yards but also various yardage to confirm my scope dope from 50 to 102. Using Strelok Pro and the RA4 drag coefficient I got it set perfectly. Also shot 3 quick EBR cards with front bipod and no rear bag (used fist). Average about 227-ish. Not bad, wind was easy but swirling again. Didn’t take many pics but this was an average 5 shot target.
