Accuracy tests with my ASP20. THANK YOU TOM GAYLORD !!

Well, I finally had a liitle free time to do a little accuracy testing with my Sig. I did a lot of research on hold technique with springer guns. I really zeroed in on Tom Gaylord's reviews of the ASP20. I also did a lot of watching of videos on YouTube on this subject. It appears to have paid off. I still need more practice but overall I will call today's session a success. Distance was 30ft down my hallway. Had to put my Toy Fox Terrier Chloe in her crate for safety. Test #1 was 5 shots. The first shot was a flyer as shown. Low and left. Next four shots were about 1/4 " ctc. Test #2 was just a three shot test with the aim point being the flyer shot from Test #1. That group also measured approximately 1/4" ctc. Test #3 was just a four shot test that again measured 1/4" ctc. My testing was done sitting on the floor with sand bag sitting on a chair. My hand was placed under the bag with fingers facing forward. Palm up. Rifle forearm (right at the beginning of the cocking arm slot as B.B. described ) then rested on palm. No rear bag used. Just a mild hold into my shoulder. Gun wasn't as stable as it could have been but I am still pleased.

Chloe safe and sound after target practice was over

I was just going to add that pellets were also seated apx. 1/16" below breech level using a larger diameter aluminium pellet seating tool I made. The larger seating tool will only allow me to seat the pellet to that depth. A smaller seat makes it harder to seat the pellet to a consistent depth. Tom Gaylord in his ASP20 review said that "deep seating" the Sig Wraith alloy pellet gave better accuracy results. Deep seating Wraith pellets was very hard with a unsized pellet. My testing today was done with the .217" die and sizer that I machined. After sizing deep seating was much easier. My concern with seating the pellets deeper was velocity loss. Did some Chrony tests and no significant loss, if any, was noted. Also, l am still getting around 25-30 fps increase with sized Wraith pellets vs. unsized. I have even been weighing them for more accurate velocity test results. I did not weigh any of the pellets for todays accuracy tests. I plan on weighing them for future accuracy testing.

Looks like you are finally getting it all together. Keep at it and you will be happy. All my high school years I played handball against a back wall of the school so I got the message implanted in my mind--- IMPOSSIBLE IS UN-AMERICAN. Nice groups.

Thanks for that message. One that I like is " nothing is impossible unless you think it is "

I still think I can do better with this gun. I need a bench where I can be seated comfortably. Not on the floor twisted to one side. If I also sand bag the butt, adjust the trigger more, and weigh my pellets for consistent weight I have no doubt this rifle with the Wraith alloy pellet will get close to those kind of groups at 20yrds. Especially with more practice!

Good report. The ASP20 is on my short list, but I'd rather get it packaged with the Whiskey 3 scope...but...and this is a BIG butt...as far as I know, there's no ETA on when Sig is gonna start shipping those! So, I may very well get the bare rifle and scope it up with a good quality scope.

And, my fellow Californian, I too do not use a rear bag. I'm in this for the challenge. I do shot bench and use a front rest, but after that, it's all me! May never get super tight groups like others crow about on the World Wide Web, but ain't that the fun of it!!!

I like the challenge of shooting off-hand but for dialing in a scoped rifle benching it is a must. Plus, the whole purpose of benching a scoped gun is to just see how accurate it can be.
